October 12-16

STEM Day was a huge success! 







6TH GRADE NEWS
6th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Guggenheim
Next week in ELA we will continue reading The Outsiders (Chapters 4-6). An open book quiz on those chapters  will be given on Thursday, October 15th. We will also be working on a 1960s research project related to The Outsiders with partners during Computer using the web-based program Prezi. This project will count as a grade in ELA.


6th Math with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Math 6, we will continue in Chapter 3 working with data displays.  We will learn about bar graphs, line graphs, and stem and leaf plots.  On Friday, students will use Excel on the laptops to create a bar graph and a line graph using a set of data.

6th-7th Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will continue Chapter 3 by learning how to write and solve inequalities (3.4 - 3.6).  There will be a Math Facts Quiz on Friday.

6th Earth Science with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Earth Science, we will summarize and type up a conclusion to the paper chromatography lab that we did on Friday.  We will also begin reviewing for the Chapter 2 test that will take place on Tuesday, October 20.

6th Earth Science with Mrs. Huennekens
We are starting to wind down the chapter on Matter.  On Thursday, we began discussing density.  We looked at several different objects and asked “Will it float or sink?”  We then put it to the test!
The chapter 2 test is scheduled for October 20th.


6th Spanish with Ms. Sotomayor
We have covered the calendar, the weather, the verb SER (one of the 2 verbs for “to be”) and adjectives. The students enjoyed learning a little bit about Argentina and got a taste of Latin culture by learning how to dance cumbia this week! We also cut out images from magazines and pasted them to construction paper. The students will present them when they return and use them to describe themselves in Spanish. Thank you for bringing in the magazines! Also, the next test is next Friday, October 16th. A study guide will be provided.




6th Ancient Civilizations with Mrs. Hannah
Don't forget to study for your quiz on Wednesday; the map of the empires will be on it! I have also posted a blank copy in the "About" section of google Classroom  for extra practice. Next week, we will have the following schedule:
Chapter 3, Lesson 3 and 5 quiz: Wednesday
Review Chapter 3: Thursday
Chapter 3 Test: Friday!


7TH GRADE NEWS
7th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Hannah
Here is the plan for next week:
Wednesday: Present grammar collaborative activity, review for test
Thursday: Grammar test over complements and prepositions
Friday: Unit 3 vocab quiz

The week after next, we begin our first novel: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry!

7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra I, we will continue in Chapter 3 by learning how to solve proportions using cross products.  On Thursday, students will begin an in class recipe proportion project.  They will need to bring in a recipe with at least 8 ingredients by Thursday (10/15).  Students will be using proportions to create a new recipe by either cutting the recipe in half or by doubling it.  On Friday, students will be able to bring in their baked/cooked recipe to share with the class for extra credit on their project.
6th-7th Grade Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will continue Chapter 3 by learning how to write and solve inequalities (3.4 - 3.6).  There will be a Math Facts Quiz on Friday.

7th Grade Life Science with Mrs. Huennekens
We are continuing our study of cell processes.  It has been quite interesting taking a closer look at water and also the food pyramid.  Ask your child to explain all the details!  



7th Spanish with Ms. Hughes

Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will present their projects describing the perfect room on Thursday, October 15th. We will have a reading comprehension assignment and begin reviewing the material we have covered in Chapter 6A. The chapter test will be Tuesday, October 20th.




7th American History Part I with Mrs. English
This week in American History we will continue covering the English Colonies.  Readings will come from Chapter 3.2, 3, & 4.  Looking ahead, we will have a Chapter 3 quiz early during the week of October 19th-23rd.  


8TH GRADE NEWS


8th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. O'Connor/Ms. Churchill
On Wednesday, October 14 we will travel to the historic district to participate in a  Massie Heritage Center program including special exhibits and a walking tour.  Discussion, notes, and activities related to our study of To Kill Mockingbird will resume on Thursday.    


7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon

8th Advanced Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will continue our exploration of the discriminant (10.7), and how it can be used to determine the number of solutions and the type of solutions to a quadratic equation.


8th Geometry with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will finish Chapter 3 by proving more statements about perpendicular lines (3.6).  There will be a day of review and the Chapter 3 Test on Friday.


8th Grade Physical Science with Mrs. Huennekens
We are now halfway through our chapter on States of Matter.  We are learning more information about solids, liquids, and gases than we ever thought possible!  Ask your student to explain viscosity and surface tension to you!  

8th Spanish with Ms. Hughes

8th American History Part II with Mrs. English

This week we will continue working on our historical fiction skits covering the American West.  We will perform our skits Monday, October 23rd. Readings and homework will come from Chapter 18.1.  Looking forward to a great week!
