November 2-6






ON TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP!
Last night our 5th & 6th grade football team avenged an earlier loss and defeated St. James in their SPAL semifinal game 20 - 0.  It was an IMPRESSIVE team victory!  The team is on its way to the championship game against Savannah Country Day next Thursday, November 5th.  The time is yet to be determined.

8th GRADE FUNDRAISER
The 8th grade will be hosting a tailgate party at Coach’s Corner on Thursday, November 12th.  Watch for details in Monday’s Blast!!!  Come and enjoy Savannah’s best wings and support the Class of 2016!!

6TH GRADE NEWS
6th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Guggenheim
Next week in ELA we will be working on our summative trimester assessment in class. It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and should be worked on ONLY IN CLASS. Reading Log minutes are due by Friday, November 6th. Remember your child needs at least 360 minutes of outside reading for the trimester.

6th Math with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Math 6 we will begin our summative trimester assessment in class.  It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and will be worked on in class.  Students will be creating a survey and using the data that they collect to create 2 appropriate data displays on the laptops.

6th-7th Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will begin Chapter 4.  We will learn about prime numbers and prime factorization (4.1) as well as factoring monomials and finding the greatest common factor (4.2).

6th Earth Science with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Earth science we will begin our summative trimester assessment in class.  It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and will be worked on in class.  Students will be creating their own periodic table.  Most students have already chosen the topic for their periodic table.  They should be brainstorming 50 different objects to be included on their periodic table over the weekend.




6th Earth Science with Mrs. Huennekens

6th Spanish with Ms. Sotomayor
Every student has worked hard to master their conversation skills in Spanish and boy did it show on their oral test yesterday! They had a wonderful time speaking with guest Colombian-native Mrs. Claro as they also enjoyed conversing in Spanish with each other in a set-up cafe with Spanish newsletters and doughnuts. Remember that this Wednesday the students will perform time-period skits as their final assessment. Details have already been posted in Google Classroom.


6th Ancient Civilizations with Mrs. Hannah
Next week, we will begin our summative assessment! Your student should look in Google Classroom this weekend at the guidelines for the project and choose a topic: Gods and Goddesses, King Tut’s Tomb, or Ancient Egyptian Fashion. We will be creating a six page booklet for their chosen topic, complete with images and detailed information for each page.  I will have a variety of books in the classroom for research, and we will spend our class time gathering information, completing a handwritten rough draft, and then typing a final draft of the booklet. This should be completed in class, as it is an exam and counts for 10% of their trimester grade.



7TH GRADE NEWS
7th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Hannah
Next week, we will continue working on the Roll of Thunder newspaper, which will count as our summative assessment. Rough drafts of the newspaper article and letter to the editor are due on Monday 2 November. Final drafts of the article and letter are due Monday 9 November, and the newspaper itself is due Tuesday 10 November.
We are continuing with chapter reading and discussion as well, and will have a quiz over chapters five through eight on Tuesday 3 November. Please make sure that your student is staying on track with reading assignments and discussion days by using the reading calendar for the novel.

Next week in Algebra I we will work through two more sections of Chapter 4 - finding slope and graphing using slope-intercept form.  On Wednesday, students will begin their summative trimester assessment in class.  It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and will be worked on in class.  Students will be investigating slope-intercept form (determining what happens when when the slope is positive or negative, what does the y-intercept have to do with the graph, etc.).
6th-7th Grade Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will begin Chapter 4.  We will learn about prime numbers and prime factorization (4.1) as well as factoring monomials and finding the greatest common factor (4.2).

7th Grade Life Science with Mrs. Huennekens
Next week in science we will begin our summative trimester assessment in class.  It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and will be worked on in class.  Students will be designing a project that shows what they know about photosynthesis and cellular respiration.


7th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will begin working on the summative assessment project for the first trimester. Students will create a board game highlighting all of the vocabulary and grammar from this year. This project will be completed in class and is due on Friday, November 6th.



7th American History Part I with Mrs. English
7th- In honor of Halloween,  we will do an activity that helps students research and discover the events that took place during the Salem Witch Trials! Spookyyyy! Don’t forget Historical Fiction Narrative needs to be “turned-in” on Google Classroom by Tuesday morning.  Following our Salem Witch Trials activity we will continue studying everyday life in the colonies.  




8TH GRADE NEWS


8th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. O'Connor/Ms. Churchill
This weekend, students will review the Summative Trimester Assessment packet, choose the theme and texts that they will be exploring.  Beginning on Monday, they will engage in structured pre-writing, editing, and drafting processes.  This is an in-class assignment and will  include opportunities for conferencing and peer review.  Interim due dates will assist students in successfully meeting the Friday end-of-class deadline for the project.

7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon

Next week we will work on our trimester summative assignment, which will count as 10% of the trimester grade.  We will also continue learning about triangles (4.6-4.7) and transformations (4.8).


8th Grade Physical Science with Mrs. Huennekens
Next week in science we will begin our summative trimester assessment in class.  It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and will be worked on in class. The student will complete a project on mixtures and solutions.
8th Spanish with Ms. Hughes

8th American History Part II with Mrs. English

This week we will continue our study of the New Industrial Revolution.  Students will study influential businessmen like Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. We will also look at what big business means for the everyday worker...harsh working conditions, bad pay, and few benefits. We will discuss whether big business (and capitalism) is worth the toll it takes on the common man.  DON’T FORGET--Historical Fiction Narrative must be “turned-in” on Google Classroom by Tuesday morning.

From the HDS Music Department
Our 8th Grade students will be hosting a "coffee house" type performance on Friday, October 30th. The performance will begin at 2:00pm in Hancock Hall. Your students have worked very hard on this program, so please plan to attend. Students have a choice of wearing their regular school uniform or Halloween costume.
In addition to the performance, there will be art displayed from the 6th and 7th Grade students. Please make sure to take a look!

Next week in Math 6, we will wrap up Chapter 3 by determining with data display is best for a given set of information.  We will review for the test on Wednesday and then students will take the Chapter 3 test on Thursday, October 29.

Next week we will start the Trimester Summative Assessment in Pre-Algebra.  The assessment will be a project that emcompasses several of the most important skills we have learned thus far.  Once that is completed, we will begin studying Chapter 4, which begins with prime numbers and prime factorization.

6th Earth Science with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Earth Science, we will begin discussing weathering.  We will take a look at both mechanical and chemical weathering and how climate can also impact weathering.  We will do an activity in class to demonstrate both types of weathering.  Students should expect a brief quiz on Friday,October 30.

6th Earth Science with Mrs. Huennekens
  • We have started Chapter 7: Weathering.  Our main focus is on Mechanical and Chemical weathering.  We will look at Carlsbad Caverns. No quiz or test is scheduled for this week.

6th Spanish with Ms. Sotomayor
The oral test that was originally scheduled for next Friday, October 30th has been changed to Thursday, October 29th. It will be a great experience as the students will get to show off how much they’ve learned with a guest native Spanish speaker from Colombia! Students will be given a study guide and we will review all of next week leading up to Thursday. Also, this past week we took time to learn about helpful online resources that can be used as an aid when studying Spanish at home or increasing vocabulary. Please ask your child about these sources and take some time to navigate and enjoy the sites! We have continued reviewing Communication Questions.


6th Ancient Civilizations with Mrs. Hannah
Next week, we will study the Old Kingdom of Egypt and learn the individual steps of the mummification process. We will analyze the process of pyramid building and discuss the architectural aspects of construction. Students should expect to have a quiz over the geography of Egypt and the Old Kingdom toward the end of the week.



7TH GRADE NEWS
7th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Hannah
Next week, we will begin the newspaper project the correlates with Roll of Thunder. Students will write an editorial article, a newspaper article, and part of an entertainment section. With a group, they will combine their individual work into a newspaper, which they will share with the class. The individual pieces  will constitute their summative assessment for the trimester. We will have a quiz over chapters one through four of Roll of Thunder on Wednesday 28 October. Please make sure your student is following the reading calendar and completing daily readings and accompanying responses.

7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra I, we will begin into Chapter 4 by reviewing the coordinate plane and plotting points.  We will also graph linear equations.  On Wednesday, we will review for the quiz that will take place on Thursday, October 29.

Students will test on Chapter 3 on October 27th.  They have material in their notebook to study over the weekend and on Monday.  I have advised them to spend at least 30 minutes studying each night. Our next chapter is on Cell Reproduction: Mitosis and Meiosis.

7th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will continue to work with the present progressive tense and affirmative tú commands. There will be a graded listening activity using the new material and the vocabulary quiz will be Wednesday, October 28th. Students will also learn about Día de los muertos.


7th American History Part I with Mrs. English
In an effort to spread out the summative assessments and use the chromebooks, this week we will get a head start on our summative assessment by beginning our historical fiction writing pieces. Students will write journal entries through the perspective of a fictional character. Students will include real places, real events, and real people, but use their imagination to create their character’s thoughts, feelings, new characters, and possible situations based on real facts.  Looking forward to a great week!



8TH GRADE NEWS

Next week, we will wrap up our study of To Kill a Mockingbird with some exciting culminating events.  On Monday, students will share ideas and questions about the structure and meaning of the text in preparation for the end-of-unit test on Tuesday.  Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are reserved for viewing and discussing the film, exploring and presenting the ‘Cutout’ installations.  

7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra I, we will begin into Chapter 4 by reviewing the coordinate plane and plotting points.  We will also graph linear equations.  On Wednesday, we will review for the quiz that will take place on Thursday, October 29.
8th Advanced Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will start the Trimester Summative Assessment in Advanced Algebra.  The assessment will be a project that emcompasses several of the most important skills we have learned thus far.  Once that is completed, we will begin studying Chapter 11, which involves square roots and solving radical equations.

8th Geometry with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will begin using congruence theorems about triangles to prove that triangles are congruent.  We will learn different techniques to do this including Side-Side-Side (4.3), Side-Angle-Side (4.4), Hypotenuse-Leg (4.4), Angle-Side-Angle (4.5), and Angle-Angle-Side (4.5).


8th Grade Physical Science with Mrs. Huennekens
TEST: Thursday, October 29th.  The test will be over all 3 sections of Chapter 4 States of Matter.
Our next chapter will be on Matter: the properties and changes.  We will look at acids and bases, how a salt is formed and how physical and chemical changes affect the world we live in.
8th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class, the 8th grade will continue to work with the grammar and vocabulary from Chapter 3B. There will be a graded listening activity using the new material and the vocabulary quiz will be Wednesday, October 28th. Students will also learn about Día de los muertos.

Next week we will begin a new vocab list on Wednesday. The vocab quiz will be on 10/29. There will be an open-book Outsiders quiz on Tuesday over Chapters 7-9. Looking forward to conferences on Thursday!


6th Math with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Math 6, we will continue in Chapter 3 by learning about box and whisker plots and histograms.  On Wednesday, we will review for the quiz that will take place on Friday, October 23 over lessons 3.2 - 3.5.

Next week we will finish Chapter 3 by looking at writing and solving inequalities from word problems (3.6).  We will review for the chapter test on Wednesday and have our Chapter 3 Test on Friday.

Our next chapter is on Chapter 7 - Weathering and Soil - page 180. We will be looking at the following:

6th Spanish with Ms. Sotomayor
The students have worked hard this week to review and perfect their reading, writing and speaking skills for their test today! On October 30th, Friday, they will have their last test for the trimester and it will be oral. A rubric and study guide will be provided ahead of time.


6th Ancient Civilizations with Mrs. Hannah
Next week, we will begin studying Egypt! We will begin by completing a map of Egypt, then analyze environmental factors and the settlement of Egypt. We will also begin an in class observation of the mummification process that will last throughout the unit.



7TH GRADE NEWS

Next week, we will begin our first novel: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Your student will receive a reading calendar that outlines reading, homework, discussion days, due dates, etc. Reading activites for the chapter are due on the discussion day for that chapter. Please make sure to closely adhere to this resource! In the event of an absence, your student is still expected to stay on track with reading, homework, and due dates. This will be posted in Google Classroom, along with novel activities and project guidelines. I look forward to seeing parents on Thursday for conferences!

7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra I, we will wrap up Chapter 3 by solving percent problems.  On Tuesday, students will receive a study guide for their test that will take place on Friday, October 23.  Wednesday, we will review for the Chapter 3 test.

We are on the last section of Chapter 3: Cell Processes.  We will spend the next week understanding cellular respiration and fermentation.  We will also deepen our understanding of photosynthesis and how that works with us and the energy we use from the foods we eat.
Students will test on Chapter 3 on October 27th.

7th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will finish up Chapter 6A. The chapter test will be on Tuesday, October 20th. We will begin Chapter 6B which covers locations of rooms in a house, furniture in a house, household chores, affirmative tú commands, and the present progressive tense.

7th American History Part I with Mrs. English
This week in American history we will finish our study of the New England, Middle and Southern Colonies. We will have a test on Wednesday, October 21st on Chapter 3. 1-4.

8TH GRADE NEWS


8th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. O'Connor/Ms. Churchill
As we continue our study of To Kill a Mockingbird, we will venture into new avenues to explore themes through artistic abstraction and return to the Socratic Seminar.  Students will be multi-tasking as they engage with the text in their dialectical journals, examine the structure of the novel, and review rules for punctuation.   


7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra I, we will wrap up Chapter 3 by solving percent problems.  On Tuesday, students will receive a study guide for their test that will take place on Friday, October 23.  Wednesday, we will review for the Chapter 3 test.
8th Advanced Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will review on Monday for the Chapter 10 (10.4-10.7) Test that will take place on Tuesday.  We will begin Chapter 11 next week by exploring graphing square root functions (11.1).

8th Grade Physical Science with Mrs. Huennekens
In class, we are studying the behavior of fluids.  We will be discussing Archimedes’ Principle and Pascal’s Principle. The students should now understand why we study atoms, elements, molecules and compounds.  A simple example of pumping up a bike tire can be used to demonstrate how the air is pushed into the tire, increasing the pressure inside the tire and how the motion of the particles of matter is related to different kinds of pressure occurring in fluids.
A tentative test date is set for Thursday, October 29th.  The test will be over all 3 sections of Chapter 4 States of Matter.
8th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class, the 8th grade will up Chapter 3A. The chapter test will be Wednesday, October 21st. We will also begin Chapter 3A which covers directions, irregular affirmative tú commands, irregular present progressive, and more review with direct object pronouns.




8th American History Part II with Mrs. English

Several things to look forward to this week.
1) Skit performances will take place on Monday. I've invited some visitors so please be prepared. I also need a TYPED copy of your script. Please reread the rubric to make sure you are covering everything.
2) Looking ahead, we will have a test next Friday, October 23rd,  over Chapter 17.1 & 4 and Ch. 18.1. We will take notes on Chapter 18.1 next week. This section deals with the other "booms" in America (technology, communication, etc.,)
3) Those of you that did not complete your first three bullet points for the D.C. project it's late, but get your stuff in ASAP so you don't keep losing points. Your next two bullets are due next C day, which I believe is next Friday.
Thursday is a parent conference day. Please use this day to catch up on all of your work and prepare for your test.

6TH GRADE NEWS
6th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Guggenheim
Next week in ELA we will continue reading The Outsiders (Chapters 4-6). An open book quiz on those chapters  will be given on Thursday, October 15th. We will also be working on a 1960s research project related to The Outsiders with partners during Computer using the web-based program Prezi. This project will count as a grade in ELA.


6th Math with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Math 6, we will continue in Chapter 3 working with data displays.  We will learn about bar graphs, line graphs, and stem and leaf plots.  On Friday, students will use Excel on the laptops to create a bar graph and a line graph using a set of data.

6th-7th Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will continue Chapter 3 by learning how to write and solve inequalities (3.4 - 3.6).  There will be a Math Facts Quiz on Friday.

6th Earth Science with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Earth Science, we will summarize and type up a conclusion to the paper chromatography lab that we did on Friday.  We will also begin reviewing for the Chapter 2 test that will take place on Tuesday, October 20.

We are starting to wind down the chapter on Matter.  On Thursday, we began discussing density.  We looked at several different objects and asked “Will it float or sink?”  We then put it to the test!
The chapter 2 test is scheduled for October 20th.


6th Spanish with Ms. Sotomayor
We have covered the calendar, the weather, the verb SER (one of the 2 verbs for “to be”) and adjectives. The students enjoyed learning a little bit about Argentina and got a taste of Latin culture by learning how to dance cumbia this week! We also cut out images from magazines and pasted them to construction paper. The students will present them when they return and use them to describe themselves in Spanish. Thank you for bringing in the magazines! Also, the next test is next Friday, October 16th. A study guide will be provided.

Next week in Algebra I, we will continue in Chapter 3 by learning how to solve proportions using cross products.  On Thursday, students will begin an in class recipe proportion project.  They will need to bring in a recipe with at least 8 ingredients by Thursday (10/15).  Students will be using proportions to create a new recipe by either cutting the recipe in half or by doubling it.  On Friday, students will be able to bring in their baked/cooked recipe to share with the class for extra credit on their project.
6th-7th Grade Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will continue Chapter 3 by learning how to write and solve inequalities (3.4 - 3.6).  There will be a Math Facts Quiz on Friday.

We are continuing our study of cell processes.  It has been quite interesting taking a closer look at water and also the food pyramid.  Ask your child to explain all the details!

Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will present their projects describing the perfect room on Thursday, October 15th. We will have a reading comprehension assignment and begin reviewing the material we have covered in Chapter 6A. The chapter test will be Tuesday, October 20th.

This week in American History we will continue covering the English Colonies.  Readings will come from Chapter 3.2, 3, & 4.  Looking ahead, we will have a Chapter 3 quiz early during the week of October 19th-23rd.  


8TH GRADE NEWS


8th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. O'Connor/Ms. Churchill
On Wednesday, October 14 we will travel to the historic district to participate in a  Massie Heritage Center program including special exhibits and a walking tour.  Discussion, notes, and activities related to our study of To Kill Mockingbird will resume on Thursday.    


7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra I, we will continue in Chapter 3 by learning how to solve proportions using cross products.  On Thursday, students will begin an in class recipe proportion project.  They will need to bring in a recipe with at least 8 ingredients by Thursday (10/15).  Students will be using proportions to create a new recipe by either cutting the recipe in half or by doubling it.  On Friday, students will be able to bring in their baked/cooked recipe to share with the class for extra credit on their project.
8th Advanced Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will continue our exploration of the discriminant (10.7), and how it can be used to determine the number of solutions and the type of solutions to a quadratic equation.


8th Geometry with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will finish Chapter 3 by proving more statements about perpendicular lines (3.6).  There will be a day of review and the Chapter 3 Test on Friday.


8th Grade Physical Science with Mrs. Huennekens
We are now halfway through our chapter on States of Matter.  We are learning more information about solids, liquids, and gases than we ever thought possible!  Ask your student to explain viscosity and surface tension to you!  

8th Spanish with Ms. Hughes

Next week in Spanish class, the 8th grade will present their projects describing the community they have created on Thursday, October 15th. We will have a reading comprehension assignment and begin reviewing the material covered in Chapter 3A. The chapter test will be Tuesday, October 20th.



8th American History Part II with Mrs. English

This week we will continue working on our historical fiction skits covering the American West.  We will perform our skits Monday, October 23rd. Readings and homework will come from Chapter 18.1.  Looking forward to a great week!
