HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
The first semester officially came to an end this afternoon at noon!  Students completed exams and headed out for some much deserved down time.  It is really hard to believe how fast these 5 months passed.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADES
With a couple of exceptions second quarter grades are all entered and posted on Power School.  This should give students and families a good indication of their semester grades (semester examinations count 10%).  Over the next two weeks teachers will be scoring the exams and getting them entered into Power School.  These scores will be published on Sunday, January 5th along with the semester one average.  When we return to school on January 6th the first order of business will be to return and debrief students on their examinations.  Any questions concerning the exam or grades can be addressed at that time.  We will publish a blog on Monday, January 6th to update everyone on that week’s schedule.

Enjoy your families over the holidays.  We look forward to seeing everyone back at HDS in the New Year!

WORDS FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL DIRECTOR

SEMESTER COMING TO A CLOSE!
Most teachers will be closing grades this Friday for the second quarter in preparation for the end of the semester. Students who owe work should make sure they are caught up by the 13th!  It is a busy week in classes as we are all finishing up units. There will be many quizzes, tests and papers due.  Please be keep an eye on the schedule to ensure a balanced workload.

5th GRADE OPEN HOUSE/INFORMATION NIGHT
It is that time of year when families are making decisions about where their children will attend middle school for the 2014-15 school year, and of course we hope that will be Hancock!  To assist families in that decision, the Middle School team is going to hold an open house/information night on Thursday, December 12th. At this event we will present our academic curriculum, extracurricular programs, daily schedule and give everyone a flavor of what life at the Middle School of Hancock Day School is all about. The evening will begin with a general information session followed by “mini” classes to meet each of our Middle School team. The program will begin at 6:30 and conclude by 8:00. I hope you will be able to attend as a family to experience our new Middle School. Should this time frame not work for your family, please contact me (351-4500 or hcrawford@hancockdayschool.org) and I will schedule a tour for you. I look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday, December 12th at 6:30.

You should also receive a formal invitation in the mail within the next few days.

WORDS FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL DIRECTOR

WELCOME 5TH GRADE FAMILIES
Beginning with this issue our weekly newsletter will be distributed to all 5th grade families as well as Middle School families. The goal of our newsletter is to highlight student accomplishments, class activities, and inform families about the upcoming week’s schedule.  Today’s issue is not as comprehensive as usual due to the holiday. Please browse through previous posts to get a flavor of all that goes on in our Middle School community. This week’s issue is being sent on Monday because of the holiday. Normal distribution is on Fridays.  Please look for our email on Friday!

CHRISTMAS CONERT!
This Friday the Middle School students will be presenting its annual Christmas concert. An event not to be missed! Following the concert the school will travel to the Savannah Mall to present a concert at 11:00. Please join us a both locations. THERE WILL BE SHORT CLASSES THAT DAY both before our departure for the Mall and after our return. Students will eat at the Mall so should have enough money to purchase a meal. If your child participates in the HDS lunch program, a Chick Fil A lunch will be sent home.

WE DID IT!
Last Friday we delivered over one TON – THAT WOULD BE OVER 2,000 POUNDS of food to Second Harvest. Students toured Second Harvest and helped stock shelves. While there the staff highlighted a need for volunteers to distribute over 1,700 bags of groceries to families.  These bags are packed on the third Saturday morning of each month from 8 – 10:30am at Second Harvest. PLEASE CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING to assist in this effort. Volunteers at Second Harvest account for 21 – 8 hour days of work that would otherwise get left undone. They are critical to the success of this organization.

THE RACE IS ON!
It does not seem possible that there are only 3 weeks left in our first semester. Semester examinations will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, December 18 – 20th Thursday and Friday will be half days of classes. BEING IN SCHOOL EACH DAY IS CRITICAL at this point of the year. Please try scheduling outside appointments after we adjourn for the Christmas holiday. Missing school only puts undue pressure on your child.

THANKS!
We do have a great deal to be thankful for this season. The Parents and Friends of Hancock Day school have provided us with a wonderful facility to flourish as a Middle School. We have supportive parents that donate their time and money so that our students receive the best educational experience at HDS. Our faculty and staff all have a commitment to our students that goes way beyond normal expectations. Most importantly, we have a TREMENDOUS group of students who are an engaged group of learners.

Everyone please have a safe and restful holiday. We will publish our normal blog with teacher notes on Monday, December 2nd.

WORDS FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL DIRECTOR

Our trip to Second Harvest is Tuesday! Thank you to all who have contributed!

REMEMBERING
As I write this, I remember that 50 years ago today I was sitting in junior English when the announcement came that President Kennedy was shot and I was sitting in Chemistry when it was announced he died.  A stark reminder about how fragile life is and how much we have to be thankful for this season.

CARPOOL
Carpool has gotten noticeably crowded the past few days. We ask that if you are a middle school parent picking up your child in the white zone, please arrive no earlier than 3:10. This is to maintain an efficient carpool system and most importantly, ensure the safety of our kids.
When driving on campus, please REFRAIN FROM CELL PHONE USE. There are literally hundreds of studies that show distracted driving causes accidents. Help us protect your child!

NEXT WEEK’S SCHEDULE
Next week we will be having a special schedule on both Monday and Tuesday. Monday morning the school will be practicing from 8:30 – 9:30 for our Christmas Concert.  From 9:30 – 10:30 students from Savannah Country Day School will present a program on making choices to our students. From 10:30 – 1:00 we will hold abbreviated classes. AT 1:00 WE FEAST! Just a reminder that the feast is being catered this year so you do not need to bring food. We do, however, need paper products (cups, plates) and cutlery. Please contact Nella Maxwell if you would like to help supply something. At 2:00 there will be a special speaker talking about Social Media safety. Dismissal at normal time.

Tuesday we will be loading canned goods at 8:15 for our departure to Second Harvest. Half the students will go to Second Harvest at 9:00 and the other half at 10:30. The other portion of the morning will be spent at Fort Jackson participating in a history program. Lunch will be at the Fort with a return to HDS at 1:30. If your child participates in boxed lunch, they will receive their lunch. If not, please pack a lunch for your child.

DISMISSAL ON TUESDAY IS AT 1:30.  PLEASE PLAN ON PICKING UP YOUR CHILD AT THAT TIME. FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T MAKE THAT PICK UP TIME, CONTACT MS. EDIE (redie@hancockdayschool.org or 351-4500) and we will make arrangements to provide a structured time until normal pick up at 3:15.

DECEMBER!
December will be a busy time finishing up our first semester work.  There will be lots to cover and many assessments during this time.  ATTENDANCE THESE THREE WEEKS IS CRITICAL!  There will many review sessions preparing for quizzes, exams and the culminating first semester final examination. Those missing school will be at a distinct disadvantage. The final day of exams will be Friday, December 20th.  Again, it is critical to be here until the final “bell” to have the best opportunity to succeed.  Thursday and Friday, December 19th and 20th are half days of school.

NEXT WEEK’S BLOG
We will post a blog on Tuesday that will include teacher assignments for the week of December 2nd.

HAVE A SAVE AND THANKFUL HOLIDAY!

8th Grade Physical Science with Mrs. Blake
The eighth graders are looking at matter in its different phases. They are learning how energy transfer influences each particular state. They will perform a lab which looks at the energy needed to change water from a solid to a gas. They will have a quiz at the end of the week.

7th-8th Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Mr. Lanfear’s Algebra (Grades 7/8) class, we will be completing our exploration of Chapter 5 by discussing parallel and perpendicular lines (5.5).  Students will learn how to identify if lines are parallel, perpendicular, or neither.  In addition, they will learn how to create parallel and perpendicular lines using slope. On Thursday, we will review Chapter 5 and Friday there will be a test.

8th Advanced Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Mr. Lanfear’s Advanced Algebra/Introduction to Geometry (Grade 8) class, we will review the second half of Chapter 11 (11.3 – 11.5) on Tuesday and then have our test spread out over Wednesday and Thursday. It is a longer test than usual because although it is only covering 3 sections, there was a lot of material, particularly in sections 11.4 (Pythagorean Theorem) and 11.5 (finding distance and midpoints). The test will focus more on conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization.

8th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class, the 8th graders will finish up Chapter 3B and their test will be on Friday, November 22nd Due to high school visits, the 8th graders will miss Spanish class on Monday, November 18th. I encourage students to take advantage of my tutoring hours if any of the information from the chapter is unclear.

8th American Government with Mrs. English
This week in American government we will discuss the application of the Constitution (Chapter 3-Section 2) and how it exists as an enduring document (Chapter 3-Section 3). We will wrap up our study of the Constitution with a test on Chapter 3 on Thursday November 21st
