Community Service Opportunities

Brown Bag for the Elderly at Second Harvest Food Bank
Students and their families may volunteer to help pack bags of food to be delivered to elderly persons in our community.  Bags will be packed on Saturday, April 22nd at 2501 E. President Street.  Arrive by 7:45 AM and wear closed-toe shoes.

Engineering Camp

During this camp, our young engineers will be building their own electric cars.  They will learn about the importance of pre planning and having a good plan.  We will gather materials from Home Depot, and start to build our vehicles on Tuesday.  Friday will be Race Day!

8TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS

8th grade Algebra 1 - Mrs. Reardon - week of April 3
Next week in Algebra, we will continue working in chapter 9 by solving polynomial equations in factored form and factoring two specific types of trinomials.  On Thursday, we will review for an open notes quiz that will take place on Friday, April 7.  Please note that Mrs. Blake will substitute for me on Friday, April 7.  If you have any questions for the open notes quiz, it is STRONGLY recommended that you come to my review session on Thursday afternoon from 3:10-3:40.


8th grade Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear - week of April 3rd
Next week we will continue learning about volume by practice finding the volume of pyramids and cones (9.5).  We will also learn how to calculate the surface area and volume of spheres (9.6).  There will be a day of review on Wednesday and the Chapter 9 test on Thursday.  We will then start reviewing some core Algebra concepts, starting with exponent rules.

8th grade Geometry - Mr. Lanfear - week of April 3rd
Next week we will begin Chapter 11 by learning how to calculate the areas of rectangles, squares, triangles, and parallelograms (11.1).  We will also learn about area of trapezoids and rhombuses (11.2), finding the perimeter and area of similar figures (11.3), and finding the circumference and area of circles and their sectors (11.4).  There will be a quiz on 11.1-11.5 on Friday.

8th grade Physical Science - Mrs. Huennekens - week of April 3rd.
Substances, Mixtures and Solubility! Oh my!  Students are now applying what they already know about the states of matter and how all of these things work together!  This is a fun chapter that most students enjoy.  We will start off our week with a lab called Messing with Mixtures. Be sure to look for photos next blog post!

8th grade English Language Arts - Mrs. O’Connor - week of April 3rd
We are immersed in the research process as we prepare to write our formal, persuasive, research paper.  Next week students should wrap up their research, create an outline, and prepare to begin drafting the paper.  Throughout the process we are exploring concepts like embedding quotations in our writing and following MLA format.  

8th grade History and Gov’t II - Mrs. English - week of April 3rd
This week in American History we will begin our unit on World War II. We will start by comparing and contrasting the United States to Germany and FDR’s rise to power to Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. Next we will take an introductory look at the unfathomable numbers associated with World War II including deaths, mobilized, and refugees. Building on this, I will introduce our cross-curricular class “memorial” to those that died in World War II. Please make sure you received an email about this. 8th grade Spanish-Ms. Hughes-week of April 3rd
Next week in Spanish class, the 8th grade will continue to work with the vocabulary and grammar from Chapter 5A. We will be discussing current events and natural disasters in Spanish.  Students will also create a survival guide for specific events. The vocabulary quiz will be Wednesday, April 5th.

7th grade History and Gov’t I - Mrs. English - week of April 3rd
This week in American History students will learn about Thomas Jefferson’s presidency pertaining to the Louisiana Purchase and how his decisions to cut the size of the federal government and military led to conflicts abroad. Homework and readings will come from Chapter 9.2-4. No tests or quizzes for me next week, but looking ahead we will have a test on Ch. 9 on April 12th (Wednesday before Easter Break).

7th grade Spanish-Ms. Hughes week of April 3rd
Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will begin Chapter 9B. This chapter focuses on technology and communication in the Spanish-speaking world. Students will learn the difference between the verbs saber and conocer , review some stem-changing verbs, and discuss the importance of cibercafes for travelers. The vocabulary quiz will be Friday, April 7th.

7th Grade ELA- Mrs. Hannah- week of April 3rd
Seventh grade has a test over pronouns on Tuesday 4 April. Review materials are listed in Google Classroom and we will review Monday in class as well. The rough draft of the research paper is due Wednesday 5 April. We will continue the paper next week by adding introductions and conclusions. The final draft will be due Tuesday 11 April.

7th grade Science - Mrs. Heyward - week of April 3rd
We spent the week completing our studies on the Circulatory System. We played Circulation Hot Potato and performed a sheep heart dissection to ensure there is a complete understanding of the role of the circulatory system in the body, how the blood flows, and what the structures of the heart do. Our test will be Tuesday, April 4. We will move on to Respiration and Excretion..



6TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS

6th grade Accelerated Math 7 - Mrs. Reardon - week of April 3
Next week in accelerated math 7, we will review sections one through three on Monday and then take a quiz over those 3 sections on Tuesday, April 4.  On Wednesday and Thursday, we will pick back up in chapter 9 by talking about the percent equation and circle graphs.  On Friday, students will survey their classmates so that they have a set of data to create their own circle graphs in Google Sheets on the chromebooks.

6th grade Pre-Algebra - Mr. Lanfear - week of April 3rd
Next week we will continue learning about linear equations.  We will do a fun activity on Monday and Tuesday, have a day of review on Wednesday and a test on sections 8.1 - 8.6.  We will then begin learning about function notation (8.7)

6th grade ELA - Mrs. Guggenheim - week of April 3rd.
Literature: This week we began our study of The Diary of Anne Frank, the play version. There will be periodic open-book quizzes over the scenes read culminating in a unit test at the end of the play as well as an ongoing journal that is a project grade.
Vocab: List 12 Greek/Latin words will be distributed 4/3. The quiz for List 12 is 4/11. Please note that I am adding seven words from our upcoming novel study The Diary of Anne Frank. Students will be expected to be able to fill in the blank of a sentence, write the definition, or use the word in a sentence.
Grammar: We will finish our pronoun unit. The test is scheduled for 4/12.
Reading Log: We are well into the trimester in regards to the reading log, but I have not received many reading minutes from students. Reading 30 minutes a week outside of class assignments will help them reach their goal of 360 minutes for the trimester. It is counted as a project grade.

Please don’t forget to have your child complete his or her 10 hours of community service as soon as possible and bring in the signed community service form. Not only is community service an important part of ‘The Hancock Way’, it is necessary for consideration of membership into the National Junior Honor Society and is detailed in high school applications.

6th grade Earth Science - Mrs. Huennekens- week of April 3rd
We will finish our year with all things space!  We are wrapping up Exploring Space and will have our Chapter 22 test on Tuesday, April 4th. We will then move on to study the Sun, Earth and Moon.

6th Grade Ancient Civ-  Mrs. Hannah- week of April 3rd
This week we will delve into Greek theatre by acting out an adapted version of Sophocles’ Antigone. We will also learn about the fall of Athens and the Peloponnesian War. Seventh grade is loving the study of Greece!

6th Grade Spanish- Ms. Sotomayor, week of April 3rd
This week we have focused on our new grammar concept “Por” vs “Para”. The students will have a quiz on this next Thursday. We have also continued to explore “comida saludable”, or, healthy food, through research as we compose presentations on yummy recipes. Next week, the students will present these projects. You can find expectations listed in Google Classroom. We will also continue reading through our novel “Piratas Del Caribe”.

MS Ensemble - Mrs. Cookson week of April 3rd
This week we continued with our story analysis and watched “The Chubb Chubbs.” Then outside in this beautiful weather for some game modification to continue to build listening skills and encourage working in a group.

MS Art - Mrs. Cookson week of April 3rd
This week students started presenting on their Artist Research Challenges. There have been some interesting artists presented so far, and we are looking forward to learning more. Projects keep rolling along in art:
6th - Wet felting and books; these are long term projects that require the students to remain focused over a period of time.
7th - We learned about architectural elements and drew our very own toppling towers dictated by a game of chance.
8th - We got to put the final glaze onto our ceramic tiles, and can’t wait to see them come out of the kiln.

Next week in Algebra, we will begin working in Chapter 9 by adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials as well as finding special products of polynomials.  On Thursday, we will review for a Chapter Quiz over 9.1-9.3 that will take place on Friday, March 31.

Next week we will continue learning about surface area and volume of solids.  We will have a quiz covering surface area of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and cones (9.1-9.3) on Tuesday.  Then we will begin learning about finding the volume of prisms and cylinders (9.4) and of pyramids and cones (9.5).

Next week we will complete Chapter 10 and our exploration of all things circle related.  We will learn about angle relationships within circles (10.5) and properties of segments within circles (10.6).  There will be a day of review and then the Chapter 10 test on Thursday.

We have been busy at work learning all about Physical & Chemical Properties and changes.  Ask your student about Sunset in a Bag and their homemade pH scale labs!  They completed those labs on Thursday and Friday of this past week. Students will have the chapter test on Wednesday, March 29th.

This week we have begun the process of writing a persuasive research paper.  So far students have identified topics and started looking for credible sources.  Next week students will continue to research and begin to organize their information.  On Tuesday students will take a vocabulary quiz over unit 15 plus our three additional words.  

8th grade History and Gov’t II - Mrs. English - week of March 27th
This week in American History we will continue our study of the Great depression in Chapter 23.1. Students will have a Quest (large quiz) on Thursday over 22.4, 23.1 and FDR’s New Deal. They also are continuing their filming for their silent film videos. We will wrap up the week with a film day on Friday where students will present their films to the class. Looking forward to a great week!

On Wednesday students will begin Chapter 5A which discusses natural disasters, newsworthy events, weather extremes, and journalism. We will also continue to use the imperfect and preterite tenses when presenting information about states of being and past events.

They will see how the first political parties were formed with Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. We will also learn specifics about the Electoral College and the establishment of judicial review. We will wrap up the week with a test on Friday over 8.1-, 9.1, Checks and Balances, and the Electoral College.   

7th grade Spanish-Ms. Hughes week of March 27th
Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will continue working with the grammar and vocabulary from Chapter 9A. Students will be reviewing on Tuesday and the chapter test will be on Wednesday, March 29th. We will also have our Spanish film festival where students will show the short films they wrote, directed, and starred in over the last couple weeks. Students will end the week by starting Chapter 9B which discusses technology and forms of communication.

7th Grade ELA- Mrs. Hannah- week of March 27th
We have begun the research paper! Seventh grade is using the research they completed for their Native Americans project in history to write a research paper in ELA. Students have received a paper timeline that lists specific due dates, so please refer to that for more details. We are also finishing our study of pronouns, and seventh grade will have a test over pronouns on Friday.  

7th grade Science - Mrs. Heyward - week of March 27th

Next week in accelerated math 7, we will jump right into Chapter 9 by learning how to change percents into fractions, fractions into percents, decimals into percents, and percents into decimals.  On Thursday, we will play a game called FRAPERDEC, where we will be converting between fractions, decimals, and percents. Friday, we are VERY excited to welcome 2 awesome guest speakers from Lynch Associates Architect firm to talk to the students more in depth about scale drawings and models. They will also be creating their very own scale drawing with the help of our experts!

After spending the end of the week making space probes, the students are ready to go further into space and study current and future space explorations!  We have looked at really cool images from NASA and have a new appreciation for how many people work on a project in order to guarantee the success of the mission!  There will be a quiz on section 1 on Wednesday, March 29th.

6th Grade Ancient Civ-  Mrs. Hannah- week of March 27th
We have just finished studying the Persian Wars, and now we are beginning the emergence of democracy in Greece and the Greek Golden Age. Students should expect a quiz over chapter 8 and the Persian Wars  toward the end of next week.

6th Grade Spanish- Ms. Sotomayor, week of March 27th
This week we dove into Chapter 3 of our “Piratas del Caribe” novel finishing up with a crazy cliffhanger! We are also continuing the discussion of food, healthy versus unhealthy food, and the influence of Latino flavors in American cuisine. Next week, we will present for a project grade a healthy snack or dessert with all natural ingredients (in Spanish, of course!                                                  ). Details will be found in Google Classroom. We will also begin to discuss “Por” vs. “Para” and how to use them.

MS Ensemble - Mrs. Cookson week of March 27th
This week we watched a classic Pixar animation, “For the Birds,” and practiced a little story analysis. We will continue to watch short films and analyze the story in preparation for our own storytelling fun. This will carry over into next week along with more improvisation games.

Some grades are continuing long term projects and some are starting new adventures.
6th - Continuing with wet felting and beginning to format text for our books
7th - Worked on an exercise with architectural elements while playing a fun drawing game
8th - Had a good laugh with Draw’n Pass making collaborative drawings from one line instruction

National Junior Honor Society

Hancock Day School’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society is composed of current eighth grade students who exhibit a dedication to the organization’s core values of scholarship, leadership, character, service, and citizenship.  At the conclusion of the second trimester, a faculty council will review grades of current seventh and eighth grade students to determine students’ eligibility to apply for membership to the National Junior Honor Society.  Eligible students must have an overall academic average of a 90%, and applicants will be expected to demonstrate their commitment to the values of leadership, character, service, and citizenship through their application materials.  Successful completion of community service hours from sixth grade, and continued progress toward service hours for seventh grade, is an important piece of the application.  Students can expect to receive more information regarding the application process in the coming weeks.

7TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS

7th grade Algebra 1 - Mrs. Reardon - week of March 6th
While 8th grade Algebra is in Washington, D.C., 7th grade Algebra students will take a short detour from chapter 8.  Students will be working in class all week on an activity called “If I had a Million Dollars”.  The activity will be broken down into mini units each day and students will have a checklist of things to accomplish each day that I am gone.  All work will be submitted via Google Classroom.  None of the work should have to be done at home.  Students will be given ample time in class to work on this activity.  On Friday, they will present their completed activity to their peers in class.  They should very much enjoy this activity!

7th grade Pre-Algebra - Mr. Lanfear - week of March 6th
Next week Mr. Lanfear will be in Washington, D.C. with the 8th grade trip.  Students will continue working on and complete their Play Project.  They will create a short play in their ELA class and then, in partners, plan how to make money from their play in math class.  Students will select ticket prices for adults and students, choose which concessions they would like to sell, research the best prices of those concessions, decide how many of each they should purchase, and decide for how much they would like to sell those concessions.  Students will enter this information into a Google Sheet, which will give them randomized results about ticket sales and concession sales.  Students will use this limited information to derive other information.  Students will then make a poster with all of their results.  All work should be submitted via Google Classroom (except the poster).

7th grade History and Gov’t I - Mrs. English - week of March 6th
This week in American History students will begin working on their Native American Research Projects with Ms. Churchill. I will be in Washington D.C. on the 8th grade trip. Students will have guidelines and checkpoints to complete daily in class and for homework. I will go over all of the requirements with them before I leave for the trip.  The research they complete will be used to create a trifold (due March 24th). Students will also use their research in ELA class when they work on their research papers. Hoping they have a good week!  

7th grade Spanish-Ms. Hughes week of March 6th
Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will have the fabulous Mrs. Churchill as their substitute while I explore D.C. with the 8th grade. Students will start working on their movie project in groups, and then end the week watching and reviewing a film in Spanish. 7th Grade ELA- Mrs. Hannah- week of March 6th
Seventh grade has been working in groups to create a fable in play format. We will present our plays to the class on Monday. If students would like to bring props or costumes, they may bring them to my room in the morning.  We will read the myth Demeter and Persephone, our final selection for this literature unit. On Thursday, students will have a test over myths, epics, and fables. In grammar, we are continuing to learn about pronoun usage and will focus on indefinite pronouns next week.

7th grade Science - Mrs. Heyward - week of March 6th
We spent the week focusing our studies on the Integumentary, Skeletal, and Muscular System. We will do a lab Monday, March 6th to conclude the unit. Also beginning Monday, the students will begin keeping a Diet Diary. As we move into our unit on the Digestive System and Nutrition, we are going to discuss the how food is used and digested--Energy Balance. The Diet Diary will be used as a Project grade that will be submitted Friday, March 10. We will also have a quiz on Thursday, March 9th.



6TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS

6th grade Accelerated Math 7 - Mrs. Reardon - week of March 6th
Next week I will be out of town on the 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. Mrs. Libby Blake will be teaching students all about slope and proportions.  On Thursday, students will review for a quiz over sections 3-5 which will take place on Friday, March 10.  Mrs. Whitney Crawford will be available on Thursday afternoon from 3:15-3:45 in her classroom for questions before the quiz on Friday.

6th grade Pre-Algebra - Mr. Lanfear - week of March 6th
Next week Mr. Lanfear will be in Washington, D.C. with the 8th grade trip.  Students will continue working on and complete their Play Project.  They will think of a play and then, in partners, plan how to make money from their play in math class.  Students will select ticket prices for adults and students, choose which concessions they would like to sell, research the best prices of those concessions, decide how many of each they should purchase, and decide for how much they would like to sell those concessions.  Students will enter this information into a Google Sheet, which will give them randomized results about ticket sales and concession sales.  Students will use this limited information to derive other information.  Students will then make a poster with all of their results.  All work should be submitted via Google Classroom (except the poster).

6th grade ELA - Mrs. Guggenheim - week of March 6th
Next week we will be working in class on our research presentations. Students will use their notecards and choose the type of report/presentation they would like to do from a list of options; they will present their projects the week after spring break. They may work at home if necessary on their presentations. There will be a quiz over research skills on 3/10.
The quiz for List 10 is 3/9. Please note that I am adding seven words from our upcoming novel study The Diary of Anne Frank. Students will be expected to be able to fill in the blank of a sentence, write the definition, or use the word in a sentence. We have begun the Reading Log for 3rd trimester on Tuesday. Reading 30 minutes a week outside of class assignments will help them reach their goal of 360 minutes.

6th grade Earth Science - Mrs. Huennekens- week of March 6th
We are continuing our study of the OCEANS!  This week we will look at many organisms, including humans, and how they depend on the ocean for their survival. Spring Break follows this next week. The students are starting to feel the fever!

6th Grade Ancient Civ-  Mrs. Hannah- week of March 6th
Sixth grade is working in groups to create a presentation over early ancient Greece. These presentations will be due on Tuesday and count as a project grade. On Wednesday, we will identify the four river valley civilizations we have studied on a map of the Silk Road in order to understand how these areas interacted with one another. Thursday and Friday, we will analyze the emergence of democracy in Greece.

6th Grade Spanish- Ms. Sotomayor, week of March 6th
We had a great time going on a treasure hunt around campus while following instructions completely in Spanish! We’ve also covered food vocabulary this week and practiced the verbs “Ir a” and “Saber” in depth. Next week, first test on Friday, March 10th. More details can be found in Google Classroom.

MS Ensemble - Mrs. Cookson week of March 6th
Storytelling is starting to take a larger role in our Ensemble classes. Through a variety of means we will delve deeper into understanding the dynamics of narrative. At the same time we will still continue to build listening and quick thinking skills.

MS Art - Mrs. Cookson week of March 6th
We are continuing to work on understanding the importance of process in the art room. All of the grades are at various stages of working or completing challenges.
6th - Wet felting, story illustrations, and artist research are all happening at the same time. It is a lot to keep track of, but the students are doing well.
7th - We just learned about Adinkra cloth and the importance of personal symbolism. In additions the students are enthusiastically working on their research challenge.
8th - Finished up their clay tiles today. They should go into the kiln next week while the students are in DC. The artist research challenge has kept them busy as well.
