January 30-February 3

The 8th graders are selling the first HDS Spirit Shirt of the school year to raise money for their upcoming DC trip! The cost of the shirt is $17, and the money and form must be returned no later than February 3rd. Your child will be bringing home an order form today!

Community Service Opportunity
Second Harvest will be filling brown bags for the elderly on Saturday, February 18th.  Please arrive by 7:45.  

Special Request
Nicholas Childers, a current 7th grade student, is in need of a match for a stem cell transplant in order to survive his relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.  If you or anyone you know between the ages of 18 and 60 meet the health guidelines and are willing to be a possible stem cell donor, please join the national bone marrow registry at www.bethematch.org. This website will explain the process of donating stem cells which is similar to donating blood. You may BE THE MATCH that provides the cure!

Basketball Pictures
On Tuesday, Jan. 31st, InFocus will be on campus taking basketball pictures. Each player will need to bring their uniform along with their money and order form. NOTES FROM 8th GRADE

8th Grade Algebra 1 Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra we will continue in chapter 7 by solving more linear systems, but this time we will be solving them using substitution, adding, subtracting, and multiplying.  On Thursday, we will review for the quiz that will take place on Friday (2/3) over lessons 1 through 4.  Students should also expect a notebook check (counts as a HW/CW grade) on Thursday (2/2).

8th Grade Geometry Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will continue our discussion of quadrilaterals by learning some properties of parallelograms (8.2), proofs about parallelograms (8.3), and learning some properties of rhombuses, rectangles, and squares (8.4).  There will be a quiz covering section 8.1-8.4 on Friday.


8th Grade Advanced Algebra Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will complete Chapter 8 by practicing finding the area of trapezoids (8.6) and learning how to find the circumference and area of circles (8.7).  We will also learn how to use central angles to find the area of a sector of a circle (8.7).  There will be a day of review and the Chapter 8 test at the end of the week.



8th Grade Language Arts Mrs. O’Connor
This week we concluded our study of Night and worked on beginning to draft our summative trimester assessment.  Next week students will continue to work on this assignment, and we hope to have the paper wrapped up by next Friday, February 3rd.  Please note that this is a tentative deadline that could possibly be extended depending on the needs of the class.  In addition to working on this paper, we will also spend time next week exploring elements of poetry.

8th Grade History Mrs. English
This week in American History and Gov’t II we continue working on our Summative Assessment Writing Assignment and begin our final geography unit for T2. We will introduce political countries of Asia in preparation for our last trimester when America becomes a more global conscious nation. Looking ahead, our last test of the trimester will be on geography on February 10th.

8th Grade Physical Science Mrs. Huennekens- January 23, 2017
Next week we begin compounds and mixtures!  This is usually a really fun section with several labs.  The chapter test is scheduled for February 7th.
Our current event presentations will run every Friday from now until February 10th. The students have each signed up for a Friday and the schedule is posted in the lab. They each have a handout with detailed instructions that they should follow as they prepare the presentation. I have also asked them to practice at home, so please ask your child to share with you.
I encourage students to check Google Classroom on a daily basis. I frequently add helpful websites and other information that they might find interesting along with any notes or assignments due for class. All students are welcome to come see me for extra help.I have asked the students to jot down any questions or concepts that they feel require further explanation so they are prepared to meet with me.

Next week in Spanish class, the 8th grade will continue to work with the preterite and the imperfect tense through a series of speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. The grammar quiz will be Friday, February 3rd.  Student should also begin organizing their binders and preparing for the exams.

7th Grade Language Arts Mrs. Hannah
Seventh grade is diving deep into the multiple layers of the novel Animal Farm! This week we are reading and analyzing chapters 4-7, with a quiz over the reading on Tuesday 31 January. Students seem to be enjoying the novel and are making excellent connections between the events in the novel and the correlation to government and human rights.
We are also beginning to write persuasive speeches advocating for a change to a school rule. Students are studying the structure of the speeches given within the novel, identifying rhetoric and propaganda within, and using these tools to write a speech of their own. Seventh grade always has fun with this project, and I’m looking forward to hearing their points of view!

7th Grade History Mrs. English
This week in American History and Gov’t I we will finish discussing the major battles of the Revolutionary War and see how the Americans ultimately won the war. Tuesday we will review for our test on February 1st. We will wrap up the trimester with a unit on North and South American Geography.

7th Grade Spanish Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will begin Chapter 8B. In this chapter students will discuss volunteer work and ways to protect the environment. They will also learn some new irregular verbs in the preterite tense and how to use indirect object pronouns in Spanish. The vocabulary quiz will be Friday, February 3rd.


7th Grade Life Science Mrs. Heyward
We finished our discussion of mitosis and are moving to mini-unit that will cover meiosis. We will take a test on this information on February 7th. We will also distribute information for the End of the Trimester project on January 30th. The project will be due on February 10, before T2 exams. Have a great weekend!

Week of January 30, 2017
This week in ELA we will be finishing our unit on The Giver. The unit test is scheduled for Friday, February 3. The quiz over List 2 vocab is 1/31. Please remind your student to get their Reading Log signed. This counts as a project grade. There are a number of students who are well on their way to meet the goal of 360 minutes for the trimester. However, there are almost a third who have turned in zero minutes. The last day to turn in minutes is 2/10. Edited copies of short stories with original graded story are due 2/7.


6th Grade Ancient Civilizations Mrs. Hannah
   Sixth grade will finish their summative assessment on Monday: a timelime of events from the four major river valleys we have studied so far. Tuesday through Thursday we will watch Mulan and complete guided questions to help students compare cultural ideas from the movie to the Shang and Zhou dynasties. On Friday, students will use the guided questions they completed during the movie to write a comparative essay.

6th Grade Earth Science Mrs. Huennekens- January 23
This week, students will test on Chapter 12: Volcanoes on January 31st.  On Wednesday, students will begin their in class project for the T2 assessment grade.

6th Grade Spanish Ms. Sotomayor
This week we have been reviewing likes and dislikes as expressed in the Spanish language, the possessive pronouns, and “Estar” in its different conjugated forms with the prepositions. We wrapped up the week with a unit test. Next week, the students have a quiz on Friday, February 3rd.

Ensemble Mrs. Cookson
We had fun in Ensemble this week playing games. We added Sound Round and Mafia to our repertoire. We also did some character analysis for our “Crowdfunding” scene. More fun to come next week.

This week saw progression on ongoing challenges.
6th - We split the class into two groups; one continued work on story illustrations, the other started to learn the process of wet felting.
7th - We jumped onto the Chromebooks this week to work with Gravit to complete our concert posters. It is amazing how quickly most students picked up the software. So nice to see the sketches come to fruition.
8th - Our clay tiles are coming along. Students chose to go either sgraffito or mishima (ask your child), and went to work with carving or glazing. These are going to be so cool when they are finished.

8th Grade Algebra 1 Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra we will complete reviewing for the chapter 6 test on Monday and take the test on Tuesday, January 24.  On Wednesday, we will take a break from the textbook and take a look at a website called Braingenie on the laptops.  Thursday, we will begin in chapter 7 by solving linear systems by graphing.  On Friday, we will use the graphing calculators to look at those same linear systems.

8th Grade Geometry Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will complete our discussion on basic right triangle Trigonometry by learning how to find the measures of angles within a right triangle using the inverse trig functions (7.7).  We will have a day of review on Wednesday and then the test on Trigonometry on Thursday.  We will then start Chapter 8 by learning about Polygon Interior and Exterior Angles Theorems (8.1).

Next week we will continue Chapter 8 by learning about the Polygon Exterior Angles Theorem (8.2), the area of squares, rectangles (8.3), and triangles (8.4), parallelograms and rhombuses (8.5), and trapezoids (8.6).  There will be a quiz on Wednesday covering sections 8.1 - 8.4.


8th Grade Language Arts Mrs. O’Connor
We have just finished reading Night, and next week we will review the text in preparation for our test over the book.  The test is scheduled for Thursday, January 26th.  Additionally, we will spend time next week brainstorming and drafting our summative trimester assessment.  This paper is a cross-curricular assignment and a collaboration between the 8th grade English Language Arts and History classes.  More details on this paper will follow next week.

This week in American History and Gov’t II we will finish the movie War Horse and discuss major themes from the film. Students will complete their WWI unit with a review for our test on Tuesday and our WWI test on Wednesday. Next, we will begin working on our summative assessment for T2.

8th Grade Physical Science Mrs. Huennekens- January 23, 2017
We have explored several different atomic models this week. We ended the week with  lab stations. This is where we move from one station to another and perform what is written on the station card. For example, a student would see a card that asks them to write their view/opinions on the different founders of the atomic model or to research other subatomic particles. We are now moving forward into our study of the elements and the periodic table. There will be a quiz on Friday, January 27th that covers Section 2, pages 80-85.

We will see how European powers significantly aided the Americans and the major battles in the South like the Battle of Cowpens. No major assessments this week, but looking ahead we will have a test on Chapter 6 midway through the week of Jan. 30th. Looking forward to a great week!

Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will finish up Chapter 8A and the chapter test will be on Tuesday, January 24th. Students will also be presenting their travel projects on Wednesday, January 25th and Thursday, January 26th. The students have been working very hard on these projects, and I look forward to seeing their final products!

We started our discussion concerning the Cell Cycle, more specifically Interphase, Mitosis, and Cytokinesis. We will have test Thursday, January 26 that will cover Active Transport, Passive Transport and the Cell Cycle. The students have access to a game in Google Classroom allows them to walk through the steps of the cell cycle. Have a great weekend!

Thursday, we will begin in chapter 7 by writing expressions and equations.  On Friday, we will take a much-deserved break from the textbook and work on the laptops with Sumdog.

This week in ELA we will be working on our unit on The Giver. The students already have the List 2 words from The Giver, but we won’t look them over until next next Tuesday. However, they may begin putting them in Quizlet (or making notecards at any time). The quiz over List 2 is 1/31. I enjoyed reading all of their short stories over the weekend; I’ll be meeting with them individually to go over their grades and editing needs.

   We will take a break from our study of Ancient China to begin work on the sixth grade summative assessment, which will count as the exam grade for trimester two. This will take place in class, and will be due at the end of class on Monday 30 January. Please look for an assessment pacing guide to come home at the beginning of the week with more details.

This week we’ve been reviewing prepositions with the different conjugated forms of “Estar” and the possessive pronouns. Next week, we will look at expressing likes, dislikes, and a brief glimpse into modern day Spain and Cataluña. The remainder of the week will be spent preparing for the next test this coming Friday, January 27th.

Ensemble Mrs. Cookson
We spent the week continuing to practice listening skills and building trust. We explored more with Random Walk, and introduced a new game called Mirror Dance. Here students are paired up and need to work together to follow each other’s movements.  Then we moved inside to begin work with a partner on a script.

Art Mrs. Cookson
This week we started new projects across the grades.
6th - We started to think about the impact of illustrations. The students began ideation for illustrations to accompany their short stories from ELA.
7th - Got thinking about graphic design and music this week. We are learning the qualities of successful poster design and starting to think about the design for a poster to promote a concert.
8th - We finalized our designs for our tiles, and started to dig into our clay.

Community Service Opportunity

The Savannah Tree Foundation has several opportunities for students and their families this weekend!  

This Saturday morning at 9 am at the Candler Oak tree, volunteers are needed to help pull weeds, remove the old landscape fabric, and watch Bartlett Tree Experts use the air spade to excavate the root collar.
Then on Monday afternoon at Savannah State University, volunteers can help weed and mulch trees on campus. Meet at 1pm at the Marine Science Building, and/or at 3 pm at the Gazebo by the Lake.
Community service hours will be given for both opportunities!  Additional information can be found here.

Next week in Algebra we will wrap up chapter 6 by solving absolute value inequalities and graphing linear inequalities in two variables. The end of the week we will begin reviewing for our chapter 6 test that will take place on Tuesday, January 24.

8th Grade Geometry Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will complete our initial look at right triangles by having a quiz covering sections 7.1-7.4 on Wednesday.  After that, we will begin learning right triangle trigonometry, including SOHCAHTOA (7.5-7.6).

Next week we will complete Chapter 4 and our initial exploration of triangle properties by having a day of review on Tuesday and out Chapter 4 test on Wednesday.  We will then skip to Chapter 8 to begin learning about different types of polygons and their properties (8.1-8.2).

Looking ahead, next week we’ll do a bit more practice with gerunds and participles and add on infinitives.  By Thursday (1/19) students will be ready for a test over all three concepts.  We will also continue reading Night, and next Friday students will receive details about their trimester project.  Our test over Night is scheduled for Thursday, January 26th.

8th Grade History Mrs. English
This week we will complete our WWI unit by watching the movie War Horse. We will look at what life was like for teens during the Great War. Students will complete a written response based on the film.  We also will finish the week with our Geography Bee preliminary test on Friday. Students are expected to perform their best on the preliminary round to evaluate their geographic, history, and science knowledge. The top two scorers from each grade will be given the opportunity to compete in the school Geography Bee competition at the end of January. Looking ahead we will have our WWI test on Wednesday, January 25th.

We are beginning our study of Chemistry this Friday!  As a reminder, 8th grade science is an introduction to Physical Science and Chemistry.  We will start with Matter. This is found in Chapter 3, page 68, of our textbook and it covers atoms, elements, and the periodic table. Our current event presentations will run every Friday from now until February 10th. The students have each signed up for a Friday and the schedule is posted in the lab. They each have a handout with detailed instructions that they should follow as they prepare the presentation. We are beginning our second novel of the year: Animal Farm. Students have received a reading calendar and comprehension packet to accompany the book. Please refer to the reading calendar for nightly reading assignments.
In conjunction with the novel, we will begin a study of propaganda techniques and identify the use of propaganda in the novel and in modern society. Students will begin to brainstorm a school rule they would like to change, and use rhetoric and propaganda in a speech advocating for the rule change.

7th Grade History Mrs. English
This week in American history we will continue our study of the Revolutionary War with topics ranging from Valley Forge and frostbite (ouch!) to the battles that took place in the Southern states. We will have a quiz on Ch. 6.1 & 2 on Wednesday, January 18th. Readings and homework will come from Ch. 6.3 & 4. We also will finish the week with our Geography Bee preliminary test on Friday. Students are expected to perform their best on the preliminary round to evaluate their geographic, history, and science knowledge. The top two scorers from each grade will be given the opportunity to compete in the school Geography Bee competition at the end of January. Looking forward to a great week!

We had a great week in 7th grade Life Science. We have been working all week long on our Egg Osmosis Lab. The students have really enjoyed it. They are discovering a number of new things about cells and how they actually work. Next week, we will begin working on Mitosis and Meiosis - how cells divide. Week of January 16, 2017
This week in ELA we begin our unit on The Giver. I am handing out the vocabulary list Friday (1/13). Please note that the list is not Greek/Latin roots but instead vocabulary from The Giver. There will be two vocab quizzes over these two lists; each list has 16 words. The quiz over List 1 is scheduled for 1/20. On 1/19 there is a grammar test over the following concepts: parts of speech, dependent/independent clauses, subject/predicate (simple and complete), and prepositions. We are continuing to practice in class with these concepts. Please remind your student to get their Reading Log signed.


6th Grade Ancient Civilizations Mrs. Hannah
    Sixth grade has already learned about the first two dynasties of ancient China, and we will analyze the third dynasty, the Zhou, next week.  We will discuss the concept of feudalism and its impact on the social class system. Students will also analyze the impact of the teachings of Confucius on education in the Zhou dynasty and the importance of the Mandate of Heaven. We will have a test over the first half of ancient China toward the end of next week.

6th Grade Earth Science Mrs. Huennekens- January 17
We are beginning our study of Volcanoes this week!  As a reminder, 6th grade science is an introduction/overview of Earth Science. Volcanoes can be found in Chapter 12, page 328, of our textbook. Our current event presentations will run every Friday from now until February 10th. The students have each signed up for a Friday and the schedule is posted in the lab. They each have a handout with detailed instructions that they should follow as they prepare the presentation. I have also asked them to practice at home, so please ask your child to share with you.  Students are encouraged to check Google Classroom on a daily basis, come see me for extra help and to review material covered in class nightly.



6th Grade Spanish Ms. Sotomayor
This week has been one of review as we prepared for this past Thursday’s test. Friday marks a new unit, with the upcoming week segwaying into revisiting the verb “Estar” and using various forms of it with prepositions, as well as learning how to apply possessive nouns to our already growing vocabulary and use of the Spanish language.

Ensemble Mrs. Cookson
This week in Ensemble we worked on building listening skills through a game called Random Walk. We also started our trust building exercises with each class holding a trust circle. While some students required a little more coaxing, overall they did very well, and began to establish trust amongst the group.

Art Mrs. Cookson
This week was wrap up week for all outstanding projects.
6th - One section of sixth graders had the privilege of being the audience for the seventh grade presentations of the Declaration of Independence. The other sections will work on a one day exercise to sharpen those art skills. Next week we will all get back onto the same page.
7th - Completed any work not finished. Some students began to explore self-directed art projects; that is pretty awesome!
8th - Completed any work not finished. Also, several dove more in depth with their bas relief designs for the upcoming clay tile work.
