November 2-6






ON TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP!
Last night our 5th & 6th grade football team avenged an earlier loss and defeated St. James in their SPAL semifinal game 20 - 0.  It was an IMPRESSIVE team victory!  The team is on its way to the championship game against Savannah Country Day next Thursday, November 5th.  The time is yet to be determined.

8th GRADE FUNDRAISER
The 8th grade will be hosting a tailgate party at Coach’s Corner on Thursday, November 12th.  Watch for details in Monday’s Blast!!!  Come and enjoy Savannah’s best wings and support the Class of 2016!!

6TH GRADE NEWS
6th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Guggenheim
Next week in ELA we will be working on our summative trimester assessment in class. It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and should be worked on ONLY IN CLASS. Reading Log minutes are due by Friday, November 6th. Remember your child needs at least 360 minutes of outside reading for the trimester.

6th Math with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Math 6 we will begin our summative trimester assessment in class.  It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and will be worked on in class.  Students will be creating a survey and using the data that they collect to create 2 appropriate data displays on the laptops.

6th-7th Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will begin Chapter 4.  We will learn about prime numbers and prime factorization (4.1) as well as factoring monomials and finding the greatest common factor (4.2).

6th Earth Science with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Earth science we will begin our summative trimester assessment in class.  It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and will be worked on in class.  Students will be creating their own periodic table.  Most students have already chosen the topic for their periodic table.  They should be brainstorming 50 different objects to be included on their periodic table over the weekend.

6th Spanish with Ms. Sotomayor
Every student has worked hard to master their conversation skills in Spanish and boy did it show on their oral test yesterday! They had a wonderful time speaking with guest Colombian-native Mrs. Claro as they also enjoyed conversing in Spanish with each other in a set-up cafe with Spanish newsletters and doughnuts. Remember that this Wednesday the students will perform time-period skits as their final assessment. Details have already been posted in Google Classroom.


6th Ancient Civilizations with Mrs. Hannah
Next week, we will begin our summative assessment! Your student should look in Google Classroom this weekend at the guidelines for the project and choose a topic: Gods and Goddesses, King Tut’s Tomb, or Ancient Egyptian Fashion. We will be creating a six page booklet for their chosen topic, complete with images and detailed information for each page.  I will have a variety of books in the classroom for research, and we will spend our class time gathering information, completing a handwritten rough draft, and then typing a final draft of the booklet. This should be completed in class, as it is an exam and counts for 10% of their trimester grade.



7TH GRADE NEWS
7th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Hannah
Next week, we will continue working on the Roll of Thunder newspaper, which will count as our summative assessment. Rough drafts of the newspaper article and letter to the editor are due on Monday 2 November. Final drafts of the article and letter are due Monday 9 November, and the newspaper itself is due Tuesday 10 November.
We are continuing with chapter reading and discussion as well, and will have a quiz over chapters five through eight on Tuesday 3 November. Please make sure that your student is staying on track with reading assignments and discussion days by using the reading calendar for the novel.

7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra I we will work through two more sections of Chapter 4 - finding slope and graphing using slope-intercept form.  On Wednesday, students will begin their summative trimester assessment in class.  It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and will be worked on in class.  Students will be investigating slope-intercept form (determining what happens when when the slope is positive or negative, what does the y-intercept have to do with the graph, etc.).

7th Grade Life Science with Mrs. Huennekens
Next week in science we will begin our summative trimester assessment in class.  It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and will be worked on in class.  Students will be designing a project that shows what they know about photosynthesis and cellular respiration.


7th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will begin working on the summative assessment project for the first trimester. Students will create a board game highlighting all of the vocabulary and grammar from this year. This project will be completed in class and is due on Friday, November 6th.



7th American History Part I with Mrs. English
7th- In honor of Halloween,  we will do an activity that helps students research and discover the events that took place during the Salem Witch Trials! Spookyyyy! Don’t forget Historical Fiction Narrative needs to be “turned-in” on Google Classroom by Tuesday morning.  Following our Salem Witch Trials activity we will continue studying everyday life in the colonies.  




8TH GRADE NEWS


8th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. O'Connor/Ms. Churchill
This weekend, students will review the Summative Trimester Assessment packet, choose the theme and texts that they will be exploring.  Beginning on Monday, they will engage in structured pre-writing, editing, and drafting processes.  This is an in-class assignment and will  include opportunities for conferencing and peer review.  Interim due dates will assist students in successfully meeting the Friday end-of-class deadline for the project.

Next week we will be starting Chapter 11.  We will learn how to graph square root functions (11.1), as well as simplifying radicals (11.2).  There will be a short quiz on Thursday covering those 2 sections.

8th Geometry with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will work on our trimester summative assignment, which will count as 10% of the trimester grade.  We will also continue learning about triangles (4.6-4.7) and transformations (4.8).


8th Grade Physical Science with Mrs. Huennekens
Next week in science we will begin our summative trimester assessment in class.  It will count for 10% of the trimester grade and will be worked on in class. The student will complete a project on mixtures and solutions.

8th American History Part II with Mrs. English

This week we will continue our study of the New Industrial Revolution.  Students will study influential businessmen like Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. We will also look at what big business means for the everyday worker...harsh working conditions, bad pay, and few benefits. We will discuss whether big business (and capitalism) is worth the toll it takes on the common man.  DON’T FORGET--Historical Fiction Narrative must be “turned-in” on Google Classroom by Tuesday morning.
