Oct. 6-10


NOTES FROM THE HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL

Tourney Time!

We are all excited to support our Volleyball team tonight in the SPAL tournament.  This is a team that has come a long way this season and we are looking forward to watching the girl’s progress through the tournament.  Tonight’s game is against St. Peter’s.  Game time is 7:00 at Savannah Country Day.  If we win our first game, there will be a second round game at 8:00.  See you there!

Homecoming

The Middle School is decorated to build our spirit for Thursday’s homecoming game.  Events are planned throughout the week, Crazy Sock Day, Twin Day and Comfy Clothes Day.  Thursday, we will show our spirit at the Pep Rally at 2:30.

STEM Week

This week we will use Eagle Op time (10:30 – 11:00) to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).  Students are divided into exploration teams.   Each team will complete a design project.  Projects will include a Mousetrap Car, Eagle Egg Drop, Marshmallow Catapults, Barge Building and others.  Friday morning will be performance day where completed projects are shared with the entire Middle School.

High School Visits

We are in the final stages of planning our high school visits for the 8th grade.  8th grade families should look for an email later this week asking for volunteer drivers.  Visits begin on Monday, October 20th to BC and St. Vincent’s.

6TH GRADE NEWS


6th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. O'Connor
The sixth graders will continue reading and studying Anne Frank:  Diary of a Young Girl next week.  Students will take a quiz over pages 130-190 on Tuesday, October 7th.  Remember that no homework will be assigned on Thursday, and we hope to see all students at the football game and homecoming celebration afterwards!  Go Eagles!  We are also looking forward to a fun-filled STEM day on Friday!




6th Math with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Math 6, we will continue in Chapter 3 discussing mean, median, and mode, as well as stem and leaf plots and box and whisker plots.  Students will receive an outline for their math facts quiz that will take place on Thursday, October 9.




6th-7th Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will continue learning about solving multi-step equations.  We will learn how to solve equations that have variables on both sides of the equals sign (3.3) and also how to determine if there are no solutions or an infinite number of solutions to an equation (3.3).  On Wednesday, we will review what we have covered so far in Chapter 3 and there will be a quiz on Thursday (3.1 – 3.3).




6th Earth Science with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Earth Science, we will wrap up chapter 2 by learning about the properties of matter.  We will learn about the four states of matter and how to calculate density.  Students will be able to answer the questions, “why does ice float in water?” and “how does matter change from a solid to a liquid and from a liquid to a gas?”  There will be a quiz on Thursday, October 9 over the material covered in class that week.




6th Earth Science with Mrs. Blake
The sixth graders are learning about the differences between compounds and mixtures.   They have been introduced to the various types of bonds which form compounds, especially covalent and ionic bonds.   Next week they will study chemical formulas and also learn about the properties of matter.  There will be a quiz next week on chemical formulas.




6th Spanish with Ms. Dixon
Next week we will have a test on Tuesday, October 7th covering adjectives, present-tense conjugation & me gusta + no me gusta phrases. Monday will be an open-session review, so come prepared with questions! We’ll play Jeopardy for pesos as well. On Wednesday, we’ll begin CapĂ­tulo 2A and explore classroom activities and vocabulary.  



6th Ancient Civilizations with Mrs. Hannah
Don’t forget- City-State projects are due Monday morning! Students should bring their projects to my classroom first thing in the morning, so we can securely store their dioramas until presentation time. Over the course of the week, each student will give a brief 5-7 minute presentation of their city-state, including the construction process, to their peers. The accompanying brochure will be due to Mrs. Royal on Tuesday, 7 October, as students were given an extra day in computer class to complete the assignment. I am so excited to see the hard work your students have put forth on this project!





7TH GRADE NEWS


7th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Hannah
 We are beginning our study of the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry this week. For the duration of this novel, we will focus on vocabulary related to the book instead of using the Wordly Wise vocabulary workbooks. We will also continue identifying objects and complements in grammar, then begin discussing phrases and clauses toward the end of the week. Students should begin preparing for a grammar test on Thursday 16 October which will cover subjects, predicates, objects, complements, phrases, and clauses. As always, I am in my classroom at 7:45 if your student would like clarification or help on anything we have discussed!




6th-7th Grade Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear

7th Grade Life Science with Mrs. Blake
 The seventh graders have started their presentations on viral diseases and we will finish those at the first of the week.   The class will spend some time discussing viruses in general.  The students will perform one last lab in which they will make a wet-mount slide to look at under the microscope.  Their test on this chapter will be Thursday, October 16.




7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra I, we will continue in Chapter 3 by solving equations with variables on both sides as well as writing ratios and proportions.  Students will have a quiz over sections 3.4-3.5 on Wednesday.  After the quiz, I will introduce the recipe proportion project that students will be working on in class on Thursday.  The project will move into the following Wednesday and Thursday and students will be allowed to bring in the recipe that they chose on Friday, October 17.



7th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class the 7th grade will finish up Chapter 7A. There will be a grammar quiz on Tuesday, October 7th and the Chapter 7A test on Thursday, October 9th. Students will also work on improving their reading skills with some reading comprehension activities.



7th American History with Mrs. English
7th-Next week we will finish up Chapter 2—Section 3 and take our Chapter 2—Sections 1, 2, and 3 test on Wednesday October 8th. Next we will look at how the English colonies began to take root.  Looking forward to a great week! 



8TH GRADE NEWS

The eighth graders will continue reading and studying To Kill a Mockingbird in the week ahead.  Students have a quiz over chapters 12-24 coming up on Wednesday, October 8th.  Remember that there will not be any homework assigned on Thursday, October 9th, and we hope to see all students at the football game and homecoming cookout afterwards!  Go Eagles!  We are also looking forward to an exciting STEM day on Friday!





8th Grade Physical Science with Mrs. Blake
After a thorough look at SI or the metric system, the eighth graders will be finishing their chapter on measurement next week.  They are now looking at how science uses tables, charts and graphs.  The students will be constructing several graphs during the week.   They will review the chapter and have their test on Thursday, October 9.




7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon

8th Advanced Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will continue exploring the magical Quadratic Formula (10.6).  Students will discover how to use the Discriminant to quickly determine how many solutions there are to a quadratic equation (10.7).  In addition, we will learn how to determine what type of solutions they are (rational or irrational).



8th Geometry with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will continue learning about and using transversal lines (3.3) to prove theorems.  Students will also review properties linear equations such as slope and y-intercept (3.4 – 3.5).




8th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class the 8th grade will continue to practice with the new irregular preterite tenses through a series of writing and reading activities. The grammar quiz will be on Tuesday, October 7th. Students will begin a small project where they will create and describe their ideal community. 



8th American Government with Mrs. English
 Next week we will finish up our study of Reconstruction in Chapter 16.  Our Chapter 16—Sections 1, 2, & 3 test will be on Thursday October 9th.  On Friday we will start to look at how big business began to take root in the US.
