Philippines Relief
We are currently collecting donations for a Philippines relief fund. Any amount from 25 cents to a few dollars will help. Your child can drop it off in the Middle School office or with their homeroom teacher. The last day for collection will be November 22nd.
Food Bank Update
Please continue to bring in your canned goods and non-perishable food items now through November 22nd. Also, don’t forget that if we reach our 1 ton goal that there will be a Teacher Edition of “Minute to Win It” held in the gym on November 25!!

activities came to an end last Saturday as our cheer squads competed in the
SPAL cheer tournament. Both squads
performed EXCEPTIONALLY well, each finishing first in the dance category. Congratulations for a great season and thank
you for all the support you gave our teams and school!

SCHOOL VISITS
Eighth grade
students visited St. Andrews Thursday and are scheduled to visit Savannah
Country Day on Monday. As a follow up to
the St. Andrews visit, the school is holding an Upper School open house on
Monday, November 18th in Skinner Hall. If your child has an interest in St. Andrews
this would be a good event to attend.
THANKSGIVING IS COMING!
We only have 7
class days remaining before the Thanksgiving break. Lots to do in so little time! On Tuesday,
November 26th, the Middle School students will travel to Second
Harvest to deliver the canned goods collected during the month of November. On
that trip we will split into two groups so that we can assist in stocking
shelves. One group will stock and the other group will have a program at Fort
Jackson. Half way through the morning we will swap activities. Many thanks to
all those parents who are assisting with transportation.
DRESS DOWN DAY DRESS CODE UPDATE
Dress down days
are something we all look forward to and enjoy. If a student elects to wear
leggings, they should also have on a top that extends to the length of the
traditional uniform skirt.
6TH GRADE NEWS
6th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. O'Connor
The sixth grade students are in the midst of writing their own creative short stories as a culminating activity for our short story unit. Rough drafts of this assignment are due on Monday, and the final draft will be due on Friday, November 22nd. Next week students will also begin reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. Just as I did with Anne Frank, I will give students a reading calendar outlining homework assignments as well as quiz and test dates during our study of the novel. Students also have a quiz over lesson five in Wordly Wise on Thursday, November 21st.

Next week in Math 6, we will review on Monday for the Chapter 5 test that students will take on Tuesday (11/19). Wednesday, we will jump right into Chapter 6 by comparing and ordering integers as well as adding and subtracting integers. This can be tricky for some students, so we will learn several methods to help make it “stick”.

We are finishing up our study of the atmosphere, heat transfer and winds. There will be a quiz on winds on Tuesday and an examination covering all three topics on Friday (Chapter 15). Monday we will go over homework questions, intro weather and review for Tuesday’s quiz; Tuesday will be quiz day plus preparation for the dew point lab; Wednesday will be the dew point lab; Thursday finish the lab and review for the examination; Friday is exam day for chapter 15.

In addition to reading and studying these types of stories, students are also trying their hand at writing some creation myths of their own. The final draft of this composition is due on Wednesday, November 20th. Students also have a quiz over lesson five in Wordly Wise on Tuesday, November 19th.

The seventh graders have finished their detailed study of the mitosis, meiosis and DNA this week. The culmination of this chapter was a lab in which the students constructed a 3-D model of DNA. Their test will be on Wednesday of next week. After the test the students will start their last chapter of the semester which looks at heredity.

This week in American history we will finish Chapter 3 and have a test on Chapter 3 on Thursday November 21st. We will continue working on our timeline class projects. All of the students have some exciting ideas and I’m looking forward to see how their ideas take form. Students should expect to read Chapter 3-Section 4, answer review questions, and prepare for the chapter test.

The eighth graders are almost done with our study of To Kill a Mockingbird. Today students turned in their body biographies, and next week we will begin taking ideas from this assignment and turning them into a character analysis essay. Students also have a test over the novel coming up on Wednesday, November 20th.

8th Grade Physical Science with Mrs. Blake
The eighth graders are looking at matter in its different phases. They are learning how energy transfer influences each particular state. They will perform a lab which looks at the energy needed to change water from a solid to a gas. They will have a quiz at the end of the week.

8th Advanced Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Mr. Lanfear’s Advanced Algebra/Introduction to Geometry (Grade 8) class, we will review the second half of Chapter 11 (11.3 – 11.5) on Tuesday and then have our test spread out over Wednesday and Thursday. It is a longer test than usual because although it is only covering 3 sections, there was a lot of material, particularly in sections 11.4 (Pythagorean Theorem) and 11.5 (finding distance and midpoints). The test will focus more on conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization.
