8TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS
8th grade Algebra 1 - Mrs. Reardon - Week of August 28th
Next week in Algebra we will wrap up the first chapter in Algebra 1 by learning the steps of problem solving, representing functions as rules and tables, and graphing functions. We will review for the Chapter 1 test on Thursday and students will take the test on Friday, September 1. Friendly reminder that there will be a homework check (see syllabus if you are unsure what that is) on Monday, August 28. They challenge problem that was distributed on Monday, August 21 is due on Monday, August 28 at the beginning of class.
8th grade Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear - Week of August 28th
Next week we will finish Chapter 9 by learning how to factor by grouping (9.8) and how to factor trinomials with a leading coefficient other than 1 by the AC method (9.6). We will have a day of review on Thursday and the chapter test on Friday.
8th grade Geometry - Mr. Lanfear - Week of August 28th
Next week we will finish Chapter 1 with an introduction to polygons (1.6). We will have a day of review on Tuesday and the chapter test on Wednesday. We will then start Chapter 2 by learning about inductive and deductive reasoning skills (2.1 - 2.2).
8th grade Physical Science - Mr. Cooper - Week of August 28th
Next week we will dive back into our Chemistry Unit. We will be covering pages 72-85 in the textbook. Students will become familiar with the Periodic Table. They will practice drawing atoms of specific elements. There will be a Quiz on this material on Thursday. On Friday we will have a lab demonstrating chemical reactions.
8th grade English Language Arts - Mrs. O’Connor - Week of August 28th
Our year is off to a great start, and the students did a fantastic job in their Socratic Seminars this week! Next week we will continue our review of grammatical concepts and take a quiz over these skills and our first set of vocabulary words on Wednesday, August 30th. We will also begin to explore our first reading selection in the textbook.
8th grade History and Gov’t II - Mrs. English/Ms. Churchill - Week of August 28th
This week in American History and Gov’t II we will discuss life during the Civil War. Topics will range from soldier life and prisons to new military technology during the war. We will continue to use Ken Burns’ series The Civil War as a resource. Readings and homework will come from Chapter 15.1-3. Looking ahead, students should prepare for a Ch. 15.1-3 quiz on Wednesday, September 6th.
8th grade Spanish - Ms. Hughes - Week of August 28th
Next week in Spanish class, the 8th grade will continue to work with the grammar and vocabulary from Chapter 1A. Students will become familiar with affirmative and negative words through various speaking and writing activities. They will also create and present their vision of the perfect school. The grammar quiz is Wednesday, August 30th.

7th grade Pre-Algebra - Mr. Lanfear - Week of August 28th
Next week we will complete Chapter 1 by learning how to multiply and divide integers (1.7) as well as reviewing some basic geometry regarding the coordinate plane (1.8). There will be a day of review on Thursday and then the chapter test on Friday.
7th grade History and Gov’t I - Mrs. English/Ms. Churchill - Week of August 28th
As we continue our study of early America, we will examine the impact of Monotheist Religions, the Renaissance, European motivations and traditions on early American exploration. Student experiences will include hands-on analysis, ordered notetaking, and expository writing.
7th grade Spanish - Ms. Hughes - Week of August 28th
Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will continue to work with the grammar and vocabulary from Chapter 5B. Students will become familiar with the verbs venir and traer through various speaking and writing activities. They will also describe their favorite restaurant and menu items. There will be a graded listening toward the end of the week, and the vocabulary quiz is Tuesday, August 29th.
7th Grade ELA - Mrs. Boyer - Week of August 28th
7th ELA: Hi parents!! This week has flown by! We have been discussing story elements such as conflict, theme, and symbolism. This will lead into our next week’s agenda. Beginning on Monday, we will begin looking at sentence structure, adjectives and adverbs (openers, interrupters, and closers), which will allow us to begin discussing imagery with regards to short stories. We will then read The Treasure of Lemon Brown and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi (RTT); students will create a plot mountain for each story. Vocabulary words will be assigned (Unit 1 in the Greek and Latin Roots workbook) and students will be expected to complete exercises, create a foldable, and be prepared for a quiz on September 1st, 2017.
7th grade Life Science - Ms. Hoffman - Week of August 28th
After learning about the solar eclipse, we, unfortunately, had cloudy weather in Savannah, but thank you to those who shared with the class their out-of-town observations. We finished up our review of lab safety and equipment. Next week we will continue with our review of measurement and the scientific method with a quiz scheduled for Tuesday, August 29th. We will then begin learning about Classification, the 6 kingdoms and work on a dichotomous key.

6th grade Accelerated Math 7 - Mrs. Reardon - Week of August 28th
Next week we will continue in Chapter 1 by taking a closer look at the order of operations, equations and mental math, and perimeter and area. On Friday, September 1, students should expect a brief quiz over lessons 1.4 - 1.6. 6th grade Pre-Algebra - Mr. Lanfear - Week of August 28th
Welcome to another year at Hancock! We are excited to have the opportunity to teach the students once again! Next week we will begin Chapter 1 by learning how to evaluate variable expressions (1.1) and compare and order integers (1.4). We will also begin learning operations with integers by learning about adding integers (1.5) and subtracting integers (1.6). There will be a short quiz on Thursday covering sections 1.1 - 1.4.
6th grade ELA - Mrs. Guggenheim - Week of August 28th
Literature: Introduction of our short story unit. Quiz scheduled for 9/13 over short story lit terms
Grammar: We’ll take a grammar “pretest” to assess where students are in their grammar skills. This will not be graded. Begin subjects and predicates
Writing: Continue paragraph practice
Vocabulary: The second vocab list went home today. The quiz over the 10 Greek/Latin roots and 7 SAT words is scheduled for Thursday, August 31st. Resources for studying are in the About section of my Google Classroom.
6th grade Earth Science - Ms. Hoffman - Week of August 28th
Thank you to those who shared with the class their out-of-town observations of the solar eclipse we learned about last week. We, unfortunately, had cloudy weather here in Savannah. We also finished up our review of lab safety and equipment. Next week we will continue with our review of measurement and the scientific method with a quiz scheduled for Tuesday, August 29th. We will then begin learning about the four states of matter and phase changes.
6th Grade Ancient Civ - Mrs. Boyer - Week of August 28th
Hi parents! This week has flown by! This past week we have been entering our discussion into Unit 1: Early Humans by completing Chapter 1. We have learned about multiple hunter-gatherer communities and their way of life. Next week there will be a quiz on Chapter 1 on Tuesday, August 29; students have been given in class notes, time to complete a chapter review with a partner, and learning based activities which have applied their knowledge of the chapter. After the quiz we will begin our discussion over Chapter 2, completing Unit 1 by Friday.
6th Grade Spanish - Ms. Dubick - Week of August 28th
Our first real week is almost over and these students are doing great. I am super impressed with how much they remember from last year, and with how well our new students are doing! From here on out, they will have homework most nights, and it will always be posted in Google Classroom. If they ever forget or lose their materials, they can find them under the “About” section. We have moved on to reviewing numbers and time, and will have a quiz on both next Wednesday August 30.
MS Ensemble - Mrs. Cookson - Week of August 28th
We will spend the week either building or reestablishing trust. This is a crucial element for the students to feel they are in a safe place to take risks. Sixth graders will have their first trust circle, and go outside to work on some introspective exercises. In seventh and eighth grades we will pick up where we left off with storytelling and listening skills.
MS Art - Mrs. Cookson - Week of August 28th
It has taken a full week, but all classes have now been introduced to the new direction of the art room. We will spend next week reviewing the color wheel and elements of art, in addition to analyzing successful presentation boards. Also, the students will start to exercise new ways of looking.
