NOTES FROM MR. CRAWFORD


MIDDLE SCHOOL EXAMS APPROACHING!

The second trimester examination period will be held on February 11 - 12 for all core subjects except Spanish. These will be traditional assessments that are 1 ½ hour in length.
  
The Spanish assessment for all three grades will be given during the regular class period in two parts. Part one is the oral assessment, given on Monday, February 8th and Tuesday February 9th. Students should come prepared both days. Part two, the written exam, (55 minutes in length) will be administered in class on Wednesday, February 10th.

The remaining exam schedule is as follows:

6TH GRADE NEWS

6th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Guggenheim
Lit - Continue reading The Giver; open book quiz Chapters 13-18. We will finish the book next week and prepare for the unit test on 2/2.

6th Math with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in 6th grade math we will review for the Chapter 6 test on Monday and take the test on Tuesday.  On Wednesday, students will do a real-life project on elevations using the chromebooks.  Thursday we will start into Chapter 7 by writing expressions and equations.

6th-7th Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Pre-Algebra, we will continue Chapter 6 by learning about similar and congruent figures (6.4).  There will be a quiz covering sections 6.1 - 6.4 on Wednesday (6th grade) and Thursday (7th grade).  We will then learn about scale drawings (6.5 - 6.6).


6th Earth Science with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Earth Science we will prepare for our Chapter 12 Test over Volcanoes on Monday and Tuesday.  On Wednesday, students will take the Chapter 12 Test.  The end of the week we will take a brief detour from the textbook and will explore longitude and latitude before beginning to review for exams.


6th Earth Science with Mrs. Huennekens
Our Chapter 12 test is scheduled for Wednesday, January 27th.  We will be reviewing for our test Monday and Tuesday. The kids will use a computer based interactive game called Kahoot on Tuesday. They love the game and it allows us to use our chromeboooks! The students have really enjoyed Volcanoes!  We have had a lot of great discussions about various volcanoes found around the world.  We will do a short study of latitude and longitude and then begin our review of the second trimester.


6th Spanish with Ms. Sotomayor
I have enjoyed reading and even seeing the scripts come to life for last week’s project, “Paper Man Spanish Script”. What creative students we have! Next week, we will continue to explore the many practical uses of phrases with the verb “Tener” as well as expressing likes and dislikes in Spanish. IMPORTANT DATES: February 8th and 9th (Monday and Tuesday) will be the oral portion of the final exam while Wednesday, February 10th, will be the written portion.


6th Ancient Civilizations with Mrs. Hannah
We will spend this week learning more about ancient China by researching topics and creating a presentation to share with the class. The students have already received a list of topics, and should complete the form in Google Classroom by Sunday with their first, second, and third choices. Monday through Wednesday will be dedicated to in class research, with Thursday and Friday class time  reserved for creating their tri-fold display. Students can bring materials from home to work on the project. The final product will be due at the end of class on Friday 29 January. We will present the projects in class the following week, and then begin preparing for exams!



7TH GRADE NEWS
7th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Hannah
We will finish reading Animal Farm this week! Students have a quiz over chapters 4-7 on Tuesday 26 January, and the final quiz over chapters 8-10 on Tuesday 2 February.  The novel test will take place on Thursday 4 February. We have completed the speech writing portion of our project, and the seventh grade is excitedly creating an accompanying propaganda commercial to support their persuasive speech. Students are using the Wevideo app from Google to film and edit their videos and can work at home if they want; however, we have several days in class dedicated to completing the video. The final draft of their video is due at the end of class on Friday 29 January.


7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra we will continue in chapter 7 solving linear systems by adding, subtracting, and multiplying.  On Wednesday, we will review for the quiz that will take place on Thursday over sections 3 and 4.


6th-7th Grade Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Pre-Algebra, we will continue Chapter 6 by learning about similar and congruent figures (6.4). There will be a quiz covering sections 6.1 - 6.4 on Wednesday (6th grade) and Thursday (7th grade).  We will then learn about scale drawings (6.5 - 6.6).


7th Grade Life Science with Mrs. Huennekens
Our chapter 12 test is scheduled for Wednesday, January 27th. We will be reviewing on Monday and Tuesday. On one of the review days, we will play Kahoot. The kids love this computer based interactive game. It also allows us to use our chromebook carts. We will begin studying mollusks, arthropods and echinoderms next.

7th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will present their research project and skit using the vocabulary and grammar from Chapter 7B. We will also begin a new chapter discussing vacation activities, places to visit, and irregular verbs in the preterite.  Each student will also be “traveling” to a Spanish-speaking country.


7th American History Part I with Mrs. English
Our students were introduced to our “A New Nation” unit by creating their own governments. All flags and questions about their governments are due on Monday. This week we will share the governments we created and reflect on the positives and negatives of those governments. Next, we begin studying how American leaders set up the government of the new country (Chapter 7).  What failed with the Articles of Confederation (the first document that set up the gov’t)? How did they learn from their mistakes and set up a better government with the Constitution? Readings and homework will come from Chapter 7.  


8TH GRADE NEWS



8th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. O'Connor
The eighth graders have been fascinated by our study of Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night.  I’ve been very impressed by students’ questions, meticulous attention to detail, and connections to other subject areas as we explore the text.  Students will finish reading Night next week and begin work on a composition dealing with the memoir.  On Tuesday students will take a quiz over chapters 5 and 6.  Our test over the book is scheduled for the following Tuesday, February 2nd.  


7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra we will continue in chapter 7 solving linear systems by adding, subtracting, and multiplying.  On Wednesday, we will review for the quiz that will take place on Thursday over sections 3 and 4.
8th Advanced Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Advanced Algebra we will continue learning about polygons and area.  We will review finding the area of squares, rectangles, and triangles (8.3 - 8.4).  We will also discover the area formulas for parallelograms (8.5) and trapezoids (8.6).  There will be a quiz covering sections 8.1 - 8.4 in the middle of the week.


8th Geometry with Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Geometry, we will continue learning about the uses of Trigonometry in the real world.  There will be a day of review on Thursday and then the Trigonometry test on Friday.


8th Grade Physical Science with Mrs. Huennekens
Our Chapter 8 test is scheduled for Wednesday, January 27th. We will review on Monday and then play Kahoot (interactive computer game) on Tuesday. This week in the lab, we used red cabbage as an indicator and tested 5 different materials to see if they are acids or bases and the strength of each solution. The students continue to share very interesting current events each Friday.  I am impressed at the level of excitement they show as they share with their classmates!
      


8th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class, the 8th grade will finish Chapter 4B and the test is now on Tuesday, January 26th. Students will also be presenting the biographies that they wrote about their classmates. Later on in the week, we will begin discussing current events in the Spanish-speaking world.


8th American History Part II with Mrs. English
Lights, camera, action! This week students will take their Roaring 20s (ch 22.1, 2, 3 & 19.3) test on Monday. Then it is time to get to work on our short silent films! Students will have Tuesday-Thursday to create their silent films. We will show the films on Friday. Looking forward to it!


Spring Sports Update:

Keep an eye out for sign-up forms. This spring we will offer boys and girls soccer as well as Golf (experienced players only). We are also excited to offer middle school baseball this spring. More details to follow.
