6th Spanish with Ms. Sotomayor
We have been working diligently on a fun project that involves creating a script for a short Disney film called “Paperman”, using our accumulated vocabulary from this year. I have enjoyed watching every face light up as each individual experiences his and her’s “Aha!” moment when figuring out how to express themselves in limited vocabulary. We have also continued reviewing clothing vocabulary, and have taken a look at authentic online resources from stores in Spain to compare the euro and the dollar. We have covered how to ask how much things cost while pretending to shop online. There will be a review for the oral test that is next Friday, the 22nd. Students have been given a study guide.

6th Ancient Civilizations with Mrs. Hannah
Sixth grade is having an exciting time learning about Ancient China! We have already learned about the geography of China and the first three major dynasties. Tuesday we will go on a virtual field trip of China, and identify many of the landmarks we have studied so far. Wednesday we will review everything we have learned so far, to prepare for a test over the first half of China on Thursday 21 January. Students should start brainstorming topics in China they would like to research further, as we will begin a China project the week of 25-29 January!

We have already read half of Animal Farm! Seventh grade is eagerly applying the concepts of persuasion from the novel into speeches in order to convince classmates of an HDS rule that they want to change or amend. We have multiple days in class to write the speech and create the accompanying propaganda video. Please refer to the reading calendar for specific reading assignments; however, our next quiz is not until Tuesday 26 January! If your student would like to come in for extra help with the novel, I am available daily after school.

Next week our class will begin to explore Night, a memoir written by Elie Wiesel.  This relatively short piece of nonfiction centers on Wiesel’s experiences during the Holocaust.  The emotional weight of this text can be difficult for some students, and we will devote ample class time to discussion in order to ensure that students understand the text and see the hope that came from Wiesel’s situation.  We will also discuss some of the acts of heroism that took place during this time period in order to help students see the good that can be accomplished by those who stand up against evil.  Additionally, we will take a short quiz over the first four chapters of the book on Friday (1/22).
