April 6-10













NOTES FROM THE HEAD OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

ERB’S FAST APPROACHING!
HDS will administer the ERB tests from Tuesday, April 14 through Friday, April 17th.  To help avoid stress that week there will be no new homework assigned.  Ample time will be given during class to complete any assignments.  To maintain a moderate pace with our curriculum, we are going deviate from our normal policy of no tests and projects due on Mondays for the next two Mondays, April 13th and April 20th  THERE WILL BE ASSESSMENTS GIVEN AND PROJECTS DUE ON THOSE TWO MONDAYS.

NOBIS Project Digital Media Institute
Nobis Project Digital Institute  seeks aspiring digital media artists. This unique middle and high school one-week summer program (June 15-19) allows rising 6th-12th graders to gain valuable experience in digital media by providing an atmosphere of fun and collaboration focused on personal, social and artistic growth. As a team, students participate in a group media production that supports the Nobis Project's commitment to promoting social issues that affect our community.
Students learn the ins and outs of digital media with professional equipment, They develop confidence in their capabilities through technical digital media training tailored to bring out each individual student's strengths. Nobis Project Digital Media Institute develops students' creative potential, individually and collectively, by engaging in meaningful activities that impact the community around them. Participants will rise to the challenge, take ownership in developing a digital media project and acquire pride in their ability to make a difference. The program concludes with a screening event of participant work. Nobis Project Digital Media Institute provides wonderful opportunities for motivated young citizens to build on their strengths and discover their passions. More information can be found at

6TH GRADE NEWS

6th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. O'Connor
During the early part of this week sixth graders will use web and print resources in order to wrap up note cards and source cards for our expository research assignment.  On Friday students will take a short open-note quiz over what we have learned so far about the research process.  We will also begin to organize our information as students plan the written portion of their research assignment.  We are also exploring different ways to correct comma splices and fused sentences.  Next week we will use our research to create an outline and begin drafting in class. 


6th Math with Mrs. Johnson
6th Grade math students will continue to study percents as fractions and decimals.  Quiz for lessons 9.1 - 9.4 will be Friday, April 10th.

6th-7th Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
This week we will be practicing more graphing using slope-intercept form (8.5).  We will then learn about writing linear equations using points, slopes, and parallel and perpendicular lines (8.6).  We will review 8.1 – 8.6 on Friday and have a test on those sections next Monday.


6th Earth Science with Mrs. Johnson 
In Earth Science, the students will be taking the chapter 24 test Wednesday, April 8th.  They will begin chapter 25 "Stars and Galaxies" dealing with the vast scale and structure of the universe.


6th Earth Science with Mrs. Blake
The sixth have finished their chapter on The Solar System and will have their test tomorrow.  They will then continue their study of  astronomy as they begin a chapter on Stars and Galaxies.  In this chapter they will take a closer look at our sun. 

6th Spanish with Mrs. Dixon-Bender
We’ll continue to work on Capítulo 4A this week. Students will work on vocabulary-related projects in pairs. There will be a vocabulary quiz on Friday, the 10th.


6th Ancient Civilizations with Mrs. Hannah
We will be studying the Peloponnesian War and the rise of Alexander the Great. We should finish the chapter this week and will review Friday to prepare for the test on Monday 13 April. This chapter has included more names than a usual chapter, due to the great number of contributions from ancient Greece, Making flashcards is a great way to study this information! I will be in my room every morning at 7:45 for any questions or clarification. 


7TH GRADE NEWS


7th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. Hannah
This week we will be discussing the importance of a strong introduction and conclusion for the research paper.  We will also finish our unit on myths, fables, and epics, and will test over the unit Wednesday 8 April. Thursday and Friday will be spent compiling each research activity we have completed so far  into a rough draft. We will peer edit the rough draft on Monday 13 April, and will discuss sentence structure next week as well. The final draft of the research paper will be due on 22 April.  I will be in my room every morning at 7:45 for any questions or clarification.


6th-7th Grade Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear

7th Grade Life Science with Mrs. Blake
The seventh graders spent last week studying  the skeletal system.  They will have a quiz over the skeleton tomorrow.  At that time they will start learning about the muscular system and how these two systems work together.  

7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Johnson

Algebra classes will be learning how to add, subtract and multiply polynomials including special products of polynomials.  Chapter 9 quiz 9.1 - 9.3 will be Friday, April 10th.

7th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
This week in Spanish class the 7th grade will be continue to work with the grammar and vocabulary from Chapter 2A. This includes reflexive verbs and possessive adjectives. The test over this material will be Friday, April 10th.




7th American History with Mrs. English
This week we will cover material in Chapter 9.3 on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Readings and homework will come from Chapter 9.3. Students will have a short quiz on Chapter 9.3 on Friday. Looking forward to a great week!


8TH GRADE NEWS


8th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. O'Connor
This week the eighth graders are using web and print resources in order to wrap up note cards and source cards for our persuasive research papers.  On Friday students will take a short open-note quiz over what we have learned so far about the research process.  We are also exploring compound subjects, predicates, adjective, and adverb clauses as we continue our daily grammar practice.  Next week we will use our research to create an outline and begin drafting our research papers in class. 


8th Grade Physical Science with Mrs. Blake
The eighth graders have been continuing their study of solutions and solubility.  They are performing a multiple part experiment dealing with acids and bases.  Upon completion, they will review for their chapter test which will be on Friday.  


7th-8th Algebra I with Mrs. Johnson
Algebra classes will be learning how to add, subtract and multiply polynomials including special products of polynomials.  Chapter 9 quiz 9.1 - 9.3 will be Friday, April 10th.


8th Advanced Algebra with Mr. Lanfear 
This week we will finish Chapter 9 and learning about surface area and volume of solids.  We will learn how to find the volume of pyramids and cones (9.5), as well as finding surface area and volume of spheres (9.6).  We will review Chapter 9 on Friday and have the Chapter 9 Test next Monday.

8th Geometry with Mr. Lanfear
This week we will finish Chapter 10 and circles.  Students will learn about inscribed angles (10.4) and other relationships between angles and lengths of segments (10.5-10.6).  We will review Chapter 10 on Friday and have our Chapter 10 Test next Monday.


8th Spanish with Ms. Hughes
This week in Spanish class the 8th grade will continue to work with the vocabulary and grammar from Chapter 7A. There will be a grammar quiz on Wednesday, April 8th which includes the impersonal se and negative commands. The chapter test  will be Friday, April 10th.

8th American Government with Mrs. English
To wrap up our study of World War II Mr. Gary Webb will bring in artifacts and speak to students on Tuesday.  Also, students will begin their museum research projects on the WWII topic that they chose a few weeks ago. They will work on their project for the remainder of the week.  Looking forward to a great week!
