NOTES FROM MR. CRAWFORD


March 28th Parent.Edu - Emotional Coaching - 6:00pm in Hancock Hall
Do you struggle as a parent to communicate with your child? Do you have difficulty identifying their emotions and understanding the why behind their behaviors? The truth is that we all do. For March’s continuing education event, parent.edu, licensed professional counselor Whitney Owens will be addressing these  concerns. Whitney will teach a new technique titled Emotional Coaching. This skill helps parents effectively listen to their children, understand their emotions, and allow for a healthy process of those emotions. Research proves that parents who use this tactic have children with better physical health and more success in their lives. These children have fewer behavior problems and score higher in academics. Whitney will be available to answer questions at the completion of the seminar.


Community Service
Hancock Day School has encouraged student involvement in serving the community since it was founded.  The Community Service Program at HDS was established to prepare our students for a lifetime of service to others.  We hope to provide them with the opportunity to experience firsthand the pleasure of helping others while developing their communication, leadership, and decision making skills.  Middle School Students are expected to complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service each school year.  Please document service hours on the HDS Community Service Log and submit to Madison Ross in the MS office.


8TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS


8th grade Algebra 1 - Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra, we will continue in Chapter 8 by using our exponent properties to solve some scientific notation problems.  We will also learn about exponential growth and decay and talk about how they relate to real world problems.  On Thursday, we will do an activity with M&M’s to illustrate exponential growth and decay.


8th grade Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will be continuing Chapter 9 by studying how to find the surface area of pyramids and cones (9.3).  There will be a quiz on 9.1-9.3 on Wednesday and then we will learn how to find the volume of prisms and cylinders (9.4).


8th grade Geometry - Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will continue to explore circles in Chapter 10 by learning about inscribed angles and inscribed polygons (10.4) as well as different angle relationships within circles (10.5), and finding segment lengths in circles (10.6).  There will be a quiz on 10.1-10.3 on Tuesday.

8th grade English Language Arts - Mrs. O’Connor
We have started reading Romeo and Juliet and will continue to examine this text next week.  Students have a quiz over Act 1 on Tuesday.  This is a challenging text and our class discussions are designed to help students process the content and appreciate the beauty of the language.  As always, I’m available before and after school if students need additional support.


8th grade History & Gov’t II - Mrs. English
This week we will continue to study World War II. Topics covered will include Pearl Harbor, Stalingrad, Coral Sea and Midway battles. To coincide with our studies, students will read excerpts from Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Students will also begin their World War II casualties fiber arts project--more info on this will be coming!


8th grade Spanish - Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish the 8th grade will continue to work with the vocabulary and grammar from Chapter 5A. We will be discussing current events and natural disasters in Spanish.  Students will also create a survival guide for specific events. The vocabulary quiz will be Tuesday, March 27th.


7TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS

7th grade History & Gov’t I - Mrs. English
This week in American history we will have a quiz on Ch. 9.1-2 on Tuesday, March 27th. We will also prepare for our final President March Madness “game” on Thursday! What a fun series of debates we’ve had!


7th grade Spanish - Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish class the 7th grade will continue to work with the vocabulary and grammar from Chapter 9A. Students will express opinions and preferences about entertainment and write a critic review about a movie they have seen recently. The grammar quiz will be Wednesday, March 28th.


7th Grade ELA - Mrs./ Boyer
Students will be working in groups to create an A,B,C Book (Research Project: Due March 28th) which will explain the entire novel through inquiry into the setting, characters, literary devices, etc. Students will be working in class on this project.
There will be an open book novel quiz on 3/27.
Study Guide Questions are due on March 29th.
Reading Logs for T3 are due May 17th.

7th grade Life Science - Ms. Hoffman
We have begun our study of the World of Invertebrates with sponges and cnidarians (jellyfish, coral, sea anemones).  These interesting animals are some of the most basic examples of our animal kingdom.  We will continue learning about worms to complete chapter 12 and our quiz on this information  will be on Thursday, 3/29.
 
6TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS


6th grade Accelerated Math 7 - Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Accelerated Math 7, we will complete Chapter 8 by doing a scale drawing activity on Monday.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will review Chapter 8 in depth and students will take the Chapter 8 test on Thursday, March 29.

6th grade ELA - Mrs. Guggenheim
Literature: Finish reading The Giver. Test scheduled for 3/29.
Grammar:  Continue pronoun unit. We will continue to work on run-on sentences and comma splices. Test is scheduled for 4/16. There may be a quiz over specific concepts before the test - TBA.
Writing: Vocabulary: Greek/Latin List 9 + 7 SAT words. Quiz on 3/27.
Reading Log: Reading for the reading log begins for Trimester Three will begin on Feb 28th. As stated in the syllabus, all middle school students are required to read 360 minutes during the course of the trimester - reading that is outside of their regular assignments. They have a form on which to keep track of their minutes, and on Mondays in class I post their minutes in a spreadsheet. They need to obtain a parent signature to verify the minutes read. This counts as a project grade. The grading scale is written in the syllabus. Reading log minutes for 6th grade are due Friday, May 17th.


6th grade Earth Science - Ms. Hoffman
Students have been learning about “Motions in the Oceans!”  We have studied currents, waves, and tides and will have a quiz over this material from chapter 18 on Tuesday, 3/27.  (See below for pictures of our wave bottle lab.) Next week we will begin to study the ocean floor and all it’s features, such as trenches, seamounts, the continental shelf and the abyssal plain.
On Friday, 3/23 the 6th grade participated on a field trip to Congregation Mickve Israel and the Massie Heritage Center.  At the synagogue we saw the beautiful sanctuary and visited their historic museum.  At Massie School we saw their 1850’s classroom, explored the interactive architecture exhibit, learned about various architecture shapes and designs (focusing on Roman and Greek architecture) and took a short walking tour trying to identify these items in some of Savannah’s historic neighborhoods.  We ended at Forsyth Park and finished with lunch before going back to school.  Thank you to all the parents who were able to drive for us and especially to Mrs. Shearouse, Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Dean who helped organize the driving rosters for our trip.  I will include some photos on next weeks blog.


 



 


  





6th Grade Ancient Civ -  Mrs. Boyer
Parents!! We will be taking the 6th grade on a field trip on Friday, 3/23!!! :)
We will be venturing into Ancient Greece and Rome for the rest of the school year!! Dates will be extremely important and will be required for assessments. Students will be expected to discuss the importance of dates, leaders, political events, wars, etc. Studying for the assessments beforehand will be a critical necessity. All assessment/project dates for the rest of the school year have been written on Mrs. Boyer’s board, posted in GC and written in student’s planner.
Students should clean out their binders of everything except maps and their newly printed packets on Greece and Rome.
Students should begin studying new material every night for five to seven minutes in order to prepare for these assessments. If a student is studying every night for five to seven minutes (something as little as discussing what they learned at the dinner table), they have a better chance at comprehending the content for a test. A student should never JUST start studying for an assessment two to three days before. Studying is an on-going process.
Study strategies: Create flash-cards, create a graphic organizer, create an outline, create a quizlet, brainstorm the essays beforehand, have a study party with friends, create your own quiz/test and take it without your notes, USE THE FILL IN THE BLANK NOTES TO QUIZ YOURSELF ON WHAT YOU KNOW AND WHAT YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT, come in for extra help with SPECIFIC  questions.

The  Exam for Ancient Civ has been changed to an activity.


6th Grade Spanish - Ms. Dubick
Hello Parents and Students!  The sixth graders will continue their HACER LA MALETA projects this week.  The projects cover the geography and weather of the hispanic country or region of their choice and will detail what clothes to bring and what activities to do on their “vacation”.  I look forward to seeing them!  The projects are due Wednesday, we will present them Wednesday and Thursday.
EXTRA HELP:
Every MONDAY and WEDNESDAY morning before school.  
I’ll be doing extra help sessions to reinforce what we are covering, any students who feel they could use the additional support are welcome to come.  I also hold study sessions the morning before any assessment.  STUDENTS SHOULD EMAIL IF THEY ARE PLANNING TO ATTEND


MS Art - Mrs. Cookson
The challenges this week will be a lesson in perseverance and patience.
8th grade: Will apply their pointillism practice in the creation of an original painting
