Blog Post for the Week of October 5th ELA 6th Grade:

I am soooo excited! We are starting the novel THE OUTSIDERS on Monday. What a great book! We will read a chapter a night along with a guided reading activity. There will be in-class, open-book quizzes after every three chapters.

Don't forget to dress as your favorite character on Monday as a part of our Homecoming Week celebration.

6th Math with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Math 6, we will jump into Chapter 3 learning about mean, median, and mode as well as stem and leaf plots.  On Wednesday, we will do a hands-on activity involving candy and mean, median, and mode.  Thursday, students will have a chapter quiz over sections 1 and 2.

6th-7th Pre-Algebra with Mr. Lanfear
Next week we will learn how to solve equations with variables on both sides of the equals sign (3.3).  We will have a review of what we have learned in Chapter 3 so far on Wednesday and then a quiz on Thursday that covers sections 3.1 - 3.3.

6th Earth Science with Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Earth Science, we will continue in Chapter 2 discussing the properties of matter.  We will also get to do the paper chromatography lab on Thursday that we didn’t get to.  Students should expect a quiz on Wednesday over bonds, mixtures, compounds, and properties of matter.

6th Earth Science with Mrs. Huennekens
We have taken a closer look at the differences between covalent and ionic bonds, heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures and how we could go about separating those mixtures.  For the week of October 5th, we will study about the properties of Matter. All this fascinating information can be found in Chapter 2: Matter.  The kids should write their homework down in their Eagle. Homework is posted daily on my whiteboard. IF there is no homework, I encourage them to check the Google Classroom page in case I might post an interesting video that supports our study or possible a question for them to think about and answer.

6th Spanish with Ms. Sotomayor
This week we have focused on new vocabulary covering the weather, the seasons, the calendar, and new communication questions. We have enjoyed celebrating September birthdays with mini-cupcakes while applying our new vocabulary to determine the students’ and famous Hispanics’ birthdays. We also had a vocab quiz this week. It is worth noting that students have a quiz every week on material most recently covered. Quizzes are never to be expected on a day after the weekend or holiday. Quizzes are also unannounced but the students are given fair warning to be expecting one. Also, my schedule has changed to meet some academic needs of individual students. If your child would like help, the best days to see me are by appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:45am or 3:15pm . We will continue working on vocabulary, pronouns, as well as reviewing older material. Please bring in old magazines for a fun class activity next week!

6th Ancient Civilizations with Mrs. Hannah
Next week, we will be presenting the city state projects that student has been working on so diligently over the past week! Their accompanying brochure will be due on the same day as the construction part of the project. Please see the spreadsheet in Google Classroom for specific due dates. Students should be prepared for a quiz over chapter three, sections three and five AND a test over all of chapter three the week following homecoming!

7th Grade Life Science with Mrs. Huennekens
We spent quite a bit of time on the cell.  The kids know all kinds of information about why a plant cell is different from an animal cell and how a virus invades a host cell and then multiplies!  Our next chapter will be on cell processes. Each cell undergoes processes that ensure its survival and often, the survival of other organisms. We will compare and contrast organic and inorganic compounds as well as understand the importance of water and the characteristics of water. Students will receive a note taking handout on October 2nd. Students are asked to write down all homework as it is posted on my whiteboard. They are encouraged to check Google Classroom on a regular basis for any material that would provide a helpful resource or to perhaps ask them a question that stimulates critical thinking.
