HDS Vollyball team practices for the upcoming season
WORDS FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL HEAD
We are ready! Pre
planning week is over and the Middle School staff is excited and prepared to
welcome our students back next week. The
week begins on Monday with an orientation day for the 6th grade and
other students new to the Hancock Day School Middle School. Tuesday will be the first day for our entire
school. I look forward to seeing
everyone in the carpool line!
MONDAY
ORIENTATION
Monday, we will welcome the 6th graders and
other students new to HDS. All students
should be dropped off in the White Zone (at the front door to the Middle
School) by 8:25. The day will begin at
8:30 with an assembly in Hancock Hall.
Following this welcome, students will participate in activities
throughout the morning to show them how to “do” Middle School. The morning concludes with lunch at 12:00
(pizza, chips, drink and dessert).
Parents are requested to join their students in Hancock Hall at 12:30 so
that they can learn how to “do” Middle School, too!
MIDDLE
SCHOOL PARENT’S AFTERNOON
On Tuesday, August 26th, we will host a Meet The
Teachers event at the Middle School.
Due to a conflict with two home volleyball games the format for the
afternoon has changed slightly. At 4:00, we will gather in Hancock Hall for a general session. Following the general session, teachers will be
in their rooms to meet with parents.
Parents will be free to roam at will between the classrooms instead of
following a “mock” student schedule. The
Middle School Team will be available until 6:00 to meet with families. Hopefully, this format will facilitate attending
the volleyball games that evening. See
EVERYONE on Tuesday, August 26th at 4:00!
FALL
SPORTS
Our teams have been back at practice since the beginning
of the month to prepare for an exciting season of fall sports. This fall, the Eagles will be playing JV
Football, Varsity Volleyball, Cross Country and Cheer. Cross Country has not yet begun to practice
so interested students should see Ms. Jenkner next week to sign up. Practices will begin the week of August 25th.
There are no games next week. The sports calendar will be posted early in
the week on the HDS website. FOLLOW THE

6TH GRADE NEWS
6th Grade English Language Arts with Mrs. O'Connor
I’m looking forward to a great year, and I hope that the
students are excited about middle school! Next week we will spend some
time getting to know each other, discussing our goals and expectations, and
exploring our summer reading assignments. Students should be prepared to
hand in their book review on Tuesday, and they will also have a test over Where
the Red Fern Grows on Friday. The study guide that students worked on
over the summer will be an excellent study tool for this test! I can’t
wait to see everyone bright and early on Monday for orientation!

Next week in Math 6, students will receive their syllabus
and we will go over in detail all of the rules, procedures, and topics that

important for students to have mastered before moving forward in Math 6.
6th Earth Science with Mrs. Reardon

procedures, and equipment that will be used.
They will also get a chance to practice some of these lab skills on
Friday!
6th Earth Science with Mrs. Blake
I am looking forward to a wonderful year in middle school
science. Although each grade
concentrates on a different science discipline, every science course begins the
year in the same way. During the first
week everyone will be concentrating on class expectations, lab safety and lab
skills. This repetition is an integral
part in making lab safety second nature to our students. At the end of the week, we will begin working
on the scientific method.
6th Ancient Civilization with Mrs. Hannah
6th Spanish with Ms. Dixon
Welcome to the 2014-15 school year! I’m excited to get our
class underway! As I’m new to the HDS family, I look forward to getting to know

syllabus and classroom expectations.
Some warm-ups/review will follow, and then we’ll begin work in our
textbook (Realidades A) in Capítulo 1A learning about various activities in
Spanish. This is going to be a fantastic year!
