Earth Day Festival at Forsyth Park
Massive Events is organizing an Earth Day Festival on Saturday, April 15th. Students and their families can attend the festival, and volunteers are needed to help keep the grounds clean and break down chairs after the workshops are over at 3:30. Interested students can sign up with Mrs. Chandler in the Middle School Office by Monday, April 10th.
Brown Bag for the Elderly at Second Harvest Food Bank
Students and their families may volunteer to help pack bags of food to be delivered to elderly persons in our community. Bags will be packed on Saturday, April 22nd at 2501 E. President Street. Arrive by 7:45 AM and wear closed-toe shoes.

HDS Grandparent’s Day
Thursday, April 13th is Lower School Grandparent’s Day and Middle School 1960’s Day. Is a half day for the whole school, and Middle School students may be picked up after the Grandparent’s Day performance.

Looking for something different for your child this summer? Consider the Nobis Project Digital Media Institute. Here is an opportunity for students to learn the ins and outs of digital media with professional equipment. Rising 6th-12th graders will gain valuable experience in digital media in an atmosphere of fun and collaboration focused on personal, social and artistic growth. They will develop confidence in their capabilities through technical digital media training tailored to bring out each individual student’s strengths. Nobis Project Digital Media Institute develops students’ creative potential, individually and collectively, by engaging in meaningful activities that impact the community around them.

TIME MARCHES ON!
It is hard to believe that we are within sight of the end of our school year. With the passage of time the middle school students have physically grown significantly. Recognizing that no family wants to invest in new uniform clothing at this point in the year, please be mindful of how your child’s uniforms fits. The same holds for school dress down days. The length and coverage of dress down clothing should be the same as a uniform. Thank you for your support!

8th grade Algebra 1 - Mrs. Reardon - week of April 10
Next week in Algebra, we will review on Monday and Tuesday for our Chapter 9 test that will take place on Wednesday, April 12. Enjoy the Easter break!
8th grade Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear - week of April 10th
Next week we will start by figuring out how the 8th grade is going to break down the WWII push pins project for American History. We will then continue our Algebra I review by reviewing zero and negative exponents. There will be a quiz on Wednesday covering exponent rules.
8th grade Geometry - Mr. Lanfear - week of April 10th
Next week we will start by figuring out how the 8th grade is going to break down the WWII push pins project for American History. We will then discover how to calculate the area of any regular polygon, no matter how many sides it has.
8th grade Physical Science - Mrs. Huennekens - week of April 10th.
We are moving into acidic and basic solutions. A quiz is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8th on Solutions and Solubility. Solubility lab photos from Tuesday: 
8th grade English Language Arts - Mrs. O’Connor - week of April 10th
Students have completed drafts of body paragraphs for their research paper. We will spend Monday and Tuesday completing our introduction and conclusion paragraphs and revising our work. Final drafts of the paper are due by Thursday, April 13th.
8th grade History and Gov’t II - Mrs. English - week of April 10th
This week is a short week due to Easter Break and Grandparents Day. Students will have a quiz on Wednesday, April 12th over 24.1. We will also start our push pins project that represents the fallen of World War II. Looking forward to a great week!
8th grade Spanish-Ms. Hughes-week of April 10th
Next week in Spanish class, the 8th grade will begin writing the script for their newscast using the grammar and vocabulary from Chapter 5. The grammar quiz will be Tuesday, April 11th. Students will also learn about La Semana Santa leading up to the Easter holiday.

7th grade History and Gov’t I - Mrs. English - week of April 10th
This week is a short week due to Easter Break and Grandparents Day. We will finish discussing Ch. 9.4 (Monday), review for our test (Tuesday), and students will have a test on Wednesday, April 12th over Chapter 9.2-4. Looking forward to a great week!
7th grade Spanish-Ms. Hughes week of April 10th
Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will continue working with the verbs saber and conocer and the grammar quiz will be Tuesday, April 11th. Using the new grammar and vocabulary from Chapter 9B, students will invent helpful products for famous fictional characters. Leading up to the Easter holiday, students will also learn about La Semana Santa.
7th Grade ELA- Mrs. Hannah- week of April 10th
We have almost completed our research paper! The final draft is due on Tuesday 11 April. Next week, we will begin our final novel of the year: the much anticipated Hobbit! Students will receive a reading calendar and packet to accompany the novel.
7th grade Science - Mrs. Heyward - week of April 10th
We started learning about Respiration and Excretion. We will spend next couple of weeks learning the differences between breathing and respiration. We will looking at the structures involved. We will study the excretory system and elimination of various wastes from the body.
6TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS
6th grade Accelerated Math 7 - Mrs. Reardon - week of April 10
Next week in accelerated math 7, we will wrap up chapter 9 by taking a look at a real-world example of math -- simple interest. On Monday, we will review for the Chapter 9 test that will take place on Tuesday, April 11. Enjoy the Easter break!

6th grade ELA - Mrs. Guggenheim - week of April 10th.
Literature: We will continue to read The Diary of Anne Frank. There will be periodic open-book quizzes over the scenes read culminating in a unit test at the end of the play as well as an ongoing journal that is a project grade.
Vocab: The quiz for List 12 is 4/11. Please note that I am adding seven words from our upcoming novel study The Diary of Anne Frank. Students will be expected to be able to fill in the blank of a sentence, write the definition, or use the word in a sentence.
Grammar: We will finish our pronoun unit. The test is scheduled for 4/12.
Reading Log: We are well into the trimester in regards to the reading log, but I have not received many reading minutes from students. Reading 30 minutes a week outside of class assignments will help them reach their goal of 360 minutes for the trimester. It is counted as a project grade.
Please don’t forget to have your child complete his or her 10 hours of community service as soon as possible and bring in the signed community service form. Not only is community service an important part of ‘The Hancock Way’, it is necessary for consideration of membership into the National Junior Honor Society and is detailed in high school applications.
6th grade Earth Science - Mrs. Huennekens- week of April 10th
Students really did an awesome job on their Exploring Space test! Perhaps we might have a few that will go on to work for NASA or become an astronaut! The subject definitely has them asking questions and participating in discussions! We are now studying the Earth, Moon and Sun and their relationship.
6th Grade Ancient Civ- Mrs. Hannah- week of April 10th
We are finishing our study of Greece with an analysis of the Peloponnesian War and the rise of the Hellenistic Age. Students will have a test over the unit on Wednesday 11 April. Once we return from Easter, we will begin to study Rome!
6th Grade Spanish- Ms. Sotomayor, week of April 10th
This week we presented our projects on healthy foods as well as continued to review and practice “Por” vs “Para” leading up to the quiz. We will have also already Ch.4 of our novel by the end of today (Friday). Next Tuesday we will have a test with a bit less material than the usual units, focusing on “Por” vs “Para”, Ch.4 of the novel, and healthy foods. This is already posted in the blog.
MS Ensemble - Mrs. Cookson week of April 10th
This week we started exploring Improv. Students learned “Yes, and” and “One location, two objects.” These teach listening and cooperative storytelling. The first one really challenges the students as they are not allowed to say no to anything.
MS Art - Mrs. Cookson week of April 10th
We continue to learn from the Artist Research Challenge presentations. Most students are excited to share what they have learned, and seem really surprised by the discovery of a new artist.
6th - We put wet felting on hold in order to give a jumpstart to our book projects. Students worked with formatting their text and cutting paper to match the illustration pages.
7th - We have two exciting projects looming ahead; faux stained glass and clay Hobbit houses. We will decide which one to start next depending on supply availability.
8th - Back to basics, students worked on a detailed drawing of their own left shoe. They had to focus on perspective, shading, and texture.
