National Junior Honor Society

Hancock Day School’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society is composed of current eighth grade students who exhibit a dedication to the organization’s core values of scholarship, leadership, character, service, and citizenship.  At the conclusion of the second trimester, a faculty council will review grades of current seventh and eighth grade students to determine students’ eligibility to apply for membership to the National Junior Honor Society.  Eligible students must have an overall academic average of a 90%, and applicants will be expected to demonstrate their commitment to the values of leadership, character, service, and citizenship through their application materials.  Successful completion of community service hours from sixth grade, and continued progress toward service hours for seventh grade, is an important piece of the application.  Students can expect to receive more information regarding the application process in the coming weeks.

Engineering Camp

June 19th – 23rd

9:00am – 12:00pm

During this camp, our young engineers will be building their own electric cars.  They will learn about the importance of pre planning and having a good plan.  We will gather materials from Home Depot, and start to build our vehicles on Tuesday.  Friday will be Race Day!

7TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS

7th grade Algebra 1 - Mrs. Reardon - week of March 6th

While 8th grade Algebra is in Washington, D.C., 7th grade Algebra students will take a short detour from chapter 8.  Students will be working in class all week on an activity called “If I had a Million Dollars”.  The activity will be broken down into mini units each day and students will have a checklist of things to accomplish each day that I am gone.  All work will be submitted via Google Classroom.  None of the work should have to be done at home.  Students will be given ample time in class to work on this activity.  On Friday, they will present their completed activity to their peers in class.  They should very much enjoy this activity!

7th grade Pre-Algebra - Mr. Lanfear - week of March 6th

Next week Mr. Lanfear will be in Washington, D.C. with the 8th grade trip.  Students will continue working on and complete their Play Project.  They will create a short play in their ELA class and then, in partners, plan how to make money from their play in math class.  Students will select ticket prices for adults and students, choose which concessions they would like to sell, research the best prices of those concessions, decide how many of each they should purchase, and decide for how much they would like to sell those concessions.  Students will enter this information into a Google Sheet, which will give them randomized results about ticket sales and concession sales.  Students will use this limited information to derive other information.  Students will then make a poster with all of their results.  All work should be submitted via Google Classroom (except the poster).

7th grade History and Gov’t I - Mrs. English - week of March 6th

This week in American History students will begin working on their Native American Research Projects with Ms. Churchill. I will be in Washington D.C. on the 8th grade trip. Students will have guidelines and checkpoints to complete daily in class and for homework. I will go over all of the requirements with them before I leave for the trip.  The research they complete will be used to create a trifold (due March 24th). Students will also use their research in ELA class when they work on their research papers. Hoping they have a good week!  

7th grade Spanish-Ms. Hughes week of March 6th

Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will have the fabulous Mrs. Churchill as their substitute while I explore D.C. with the 8th grade. Students will start working on their movie project in groups, and then end the week watching and reviewing a film in Spanish. I will be checking my Google Classroom so students can post any questions they have about the project.

7th Grade ELA- Mrs. Hannah- week of March 6th

Seventh grade has been working in groups to create a fable in play format. We will present our plays to the class on Monday. If students would like to bring props or costumes, they may bring them to my room in the morning.  We will read the myth Demeter and Persephone, our final selection for this literature unit. On Thursday, students will have a test over myths, epics, and fables. In grammar, we are continuing to learn about pronoun usage and will focus on indefinite pronouns next week.

7th grade Science - Mrs. Heyward - week of March 6th

We spent the week focusing our studies on the Integumentary, Skeletal, and Muscular System. We will do a lab Monday, March 6th to conclude the unit. Also beginning Monday, the students will begin keeping a Diet Diary. As we move into our unit on the Digestive System and Nutrition, we are going to discuss the how food is used and digested--Energy Balance. The Diet Diary will be used as a Project grade that will be submitted Friday, March 10. We will also have a quiz on Thursday, March 9th.

6TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS

6th grade Accelerated Math 7 - Mrs. Reardon - week of March 6th

Next week I will be out of town on the 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. Mrs. Libby Blake will be teaching students all about slope and proportions.  On Thursday, students will review for a quiz over sections 3-5 which will take place on Friday, March 10.  Mrs. Whitney Crawford will be available on Thursday afternoon from 3:15-3:45 in her classroom for questions before the quiz on Friday.

Next week we will be working in class on our research presentations. Students will use their notecards and choose the type of report/presentation they would like to do from a list of options; they will present their projects the week after spring break. They may work at home if necessary on their presentations. There will be a quiz over research skills on 3/10.

The quiz for List 10 is 3/9. Please note that I am adding seven words from our upcoming novel study The Diary of Anne Frank. Students will be expected to be able to fill in the blank of a sentence, write the definition, or use the word in a sentence. We have begun the Reading Log for 3rd trimester on Tuesday. Reading 30 minutes a week outside of class assignments will help them reach their goal of 360 minutes.

6th grade Earth Science - Mrs. Huennekens- week of March 6th

We are continuing our study of the OCEANS!  This week we will look at many organisms, including humans, and how they depend on the ocean for their survival. Spring Break follows this next week. The students are starting to feel the fever!

6th Grade Ancient Civ-  Mrs. Hannah- week of March 6th

Sixth grade is working in groups to create a presentation over early ancient Greece. These presentations will be due on Tuesday and count as a project grade. On Wednesday, we will identify the four river valley civilizations we have studied on a map of the Silk Road in order to understand how these areas interacted with one another. Thursday and Friday, we will analyze the emergence of democracy in Greece.

6th Grade Spanish- Ms. Sotomayor, week of March 6th

We had a great time going on a treasure hunt around campus while following instructions completely in Spanish! We’ve also covered food vocabulary this week and practiced the verbs “Ir a” and “Saber” in depth. Next week, first test on Friday, March 10th. More details can be found in Google Classroom.

MS Ensemble - Mrs. Cookson week of March 6th

Storytelling is starting to take a larger role in our Ensemble classes. Through a variety of means we will delve deeper into understanding the dynamics of narrative. At the same time we will still continue to build listening and quick thinking skills.

MS Art - Mrs. Cookson week of March 6th

We are continuing to work on understanding the importance of process in the art room. All of the grades are at various stages of working or completing challenges.

6th - Wet felting, story illustrations, and artist research are all happening at the same time. It is a lot to keep track of, but the students are doing well.

7th - We just learned about Adinkra cloth and the importance of personal symbolism. In additions the students are enthusiastically working on their research challenge.

8th - Finished up their clay tiles today. They should go into the kiln next week while the students are in DC. The artist research challenge has kept them busy as well.

Soccer

Soccer practices will begin the week of February 27th. Practices will be from 3:30-5:00. Girls will practice Tuesday and Thursday, and boys will practice Monday and Wednesday. The location is still TBD. Be on the lookout for more details on this coming home soon.

8TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS

8th grade Algebra 1 - Mrs. Reardon - week of February 27th

Next week we will continue in Chapter 8 by defining and using zero and negative exponents as well as scientific notation.  We will review on Wednesday for a quiz that will take place on Thursday (3/2) over sections 3 and 4.  On Friday, we will do a fun activity involving exponential growth & decay and M&M’s!

8th grade Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear - week of February 27th

Next week we will complete our exploration of right triangle trigonometry by learning how to find the side lengths of right triangles, find angle measures in right triangles, and solve real world problems using trigonometry.  There will be a day of review and the trigonometry test on Friday.

8th grade Geometry - Mr. Lanfear - week of February 27th

Next week we will complete Chapter 9 by reviewing reflections and rotations (9.3-9.4) and performing compositions of transformations (9.5).  We will also learn about different types of symmetry (9.6) and how to perform dilations in a coordinate plane (9.7).  There will be a day of review and the Chapter 9 test on Friday.

8th grade Physical Science - Mrs. Huennekens - week of February 27th

What’s the BIG IDEA?  The particles in solids, liquids, and gases are always in motion.  We will finish up States of Matter with a test on Friday, March 3rd. The D.C. trip is right around the corner and then spring break!  We will come back to study more in depth the behavior of fluids and properties and changes of matter. We are wrapping up our poetry unit and preparing for a test on Thursday, March 2nd.  We will spend class time next week reviewing, but if you’d like to get a head start, I suggest going back to the poetry notes we took several weeks ago and reviewing those terms.  Additionally, we will also take a short quiz over vocabulary on Wednesday, March 1.  

8th grade History and Gov’t II - Mrs. English - week of February 27th

This week students will continue our study of the Roaring Twenties in chapter 22.3. Students will learn about the literature and music of the era. We will wrap up our Roaring Twenties unit with a test on Thursday, March 2nd. On Friday we will watch a film on D.C. and I will answer any final questions for students about our trip.  

8th grade Spanish-Ms. Hughes-week of February 27th

Next week in Spanish class, the 8th grade will continue to work with the vocabulary and grammar from Chapter 4B. Students will be writing  “Cuento de Hadas” while switching between the preterite and imperfect tense. The vocabulary quiz will be on Tuesday, February 28th and there will be a graded listening later in the week.

This week in American History we will continue to compare and contrast the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. We will see how compromise played a major role in early politics and is a staple for a successful American republic. Readings and homework will come from Chapter 7.3. We will wrap up this unit with a test on Ch. 7.1, 2, & 3 on Friday.

7th grade Spanish-Ms. Hughes week of February 27th

Next week in Spanish class, the 7th grade will begin Chapter 9A. This chapter focuses on movies, television programs, and entertainment. Students will learn how to express opinions using “gustar-type” verbs and how to talk about recent actions using the verb acabar. The vocabulary quiz will be on Friday, March 3rd.

7th Grade ELA- Mrs. Hannah- week of February 27th

This week, students will have a quiz Tuesday over vocabulary lesson six. We are continuing our literature study of myths, epics, and legends by reading Perseus and analyzing how it meets the components of an epic and identifying characteristics that make Perseus an epic hero.  In grammar, we are differentiating between subject and object pronouns. Students may expect a short quiz over subject and object pronouns toward the end of the week.  

7th grade Science - Mrs. Heyward - week of February 27th

We had great discussions about the systems of the body and getting an understanding of how the systems are interdependent. Next week, we will focus our studies more specifically on the individual systems, beginning with the Integumentary, Skeletal, and Muscular System. We will have a test on Friday, March 3.

6TH GRADE ASSIGNMENTS

6th grade Accelerated Math 7 - Mrs. Reardon - week of February 27th

On Monday we will review sections 6,7, and 8 of chapter 7 in preparation for a quiz over those three sections on Tuesday (2/28).  For the remainder of the week we will jump into chapter 8 by learning about rates and ratios.

6th grade Pre-Algebra - Mr. Lanfear - week of February 27th

Next week we will finish Chapter 7 and percents by learning about simple and compound interest (7.7).  We will have a day of review and the Chapter 7 test on Thursday.  On Friday, we will be introduced to a project that students will be working on the following week.

6th grade ELA - Mrs. Guggenheim - week of February 27th

Next week we will be working in class on our research. The note cards will be due at the end of the week on Friday. 20 - 25 note cards are expected along with at least 3 source cards. They will work in class and at home on their research. They will choose the type of report/presentation they would like to do from a list of options. The quiz for List 9 is 3/1. We will begin Vocab List 10 by the end of the week with the quiz scheduled for 3/9. We have begun the Reading Log for 3rd trimester on Tuesday. Reading 30 minutes a week outside of class assignments will help them reach their goal of 360 minutes.

6th grade Earth Science - Mrs. Huennekens- week of February 27th

Chapter 18: Ocean water and currents have kept us wondering what we will learn next about our ocean. Students can tell you about how the Earth’s surface is covered in about 70% water. We also learned how ocean currents are a mass movement, or flow, of ocean water and how elements are added and removed at about the same rate to keep the ocean composition nearly the same for many years!

6th Grade Ancient Civ-  Mrs. Hannah- week of February 27th

We have completed our study of ancient China!  We will review material from the Qin and Han dynasties on Monday 27 February and test over the unit on Tuesday 28 February. We will begin learning about Greece toward the end of the week, which is usually a student favorite!

6th Grade Spanish- Ms. Sotomayor, week of February 27th

This week we started our new novel “Piratas del Caribe y el Mapa Secreto” by Mira Canion and Carol Gaab and boy has it been fun so far! We created treasure maps using prepositions, action-packed verbs, and pirate themed vocabulary. We also learned about a real famous pirate of the Caribbean, the Puerto Rican “Robin Hood” of his day, Roberto Cofresi. We have covered the present progressive by conjugating and using the verb “Ir a” and also looked at the verb “Saber”. This is already in Google Classroom but a reminder that the first quiz of the trimester is next Thursday, March the 2nd on these 2 verbs.

MS Ensemble - Mrs. Cookson week of February 27th

Ensemble is moving along with more games to work on listening and quick thinking skills. We continue to build trust, and will start to incorporate more improvisation work.

MS Art - Mrs. Cookson week of February 27th

The due date for the Artist Research Challenge is just around the corner. I hope your child has shared with you all of the fun information they are learning about their artist.

6th - The illustrations are wrapping up and we will begin to start font layout for the books. More people have joined in with the wet felting, so look for those landscapes to come home.

7th - We learned about Adinkra cloth. Students created their own symbols and printed designs on paper.

8th - No art this week due to the short week.

SCIENCE CLUB : Students enjoyed making stress balls from balloons and sand. They also enjoyed being outside on a lovely day!
